True Tomorrow
100+10 Years of True Evolution
Frau® leathers, thanks to the implementa-
tion of wastewater recycling technologies,
use closer to 5 l/sqm. However, over the last
twenty years, Poltrona Frau has already pro-
gressively halved the use of water required
for this treatment. Similarly, the maximisa-
tion of resources is the basic prerequisite
for processing leather. The high-resolution
scanning of individual leathers, together with
the visual inspection of defects by expert
operators, allows the use of an average of
50-60% of any 5 sqm piece. Furthermore,
the automated cutting process, and the skill
of expert artisans in hiding imperfections and
natural characteristics such as closed scars,
typical of a natural product such as leather,
in the invisible points of the stitching, allow
Poltrona Frau to make the greatest use of
the available surface. The residual scraps are
then resold to the small leather goods sector
to minimise waste. At the same time, there
are several experiments in development to
regenerate or re-process leather waste.
As a refi nement of thirty years of
research on reducing environmental impact
during leather processing and transfor-
mation, in 2022 Poltrona Frau launched
the innovative Pelle Frau® Impact Less
leather. The paradigm of a more ethical and
conscious choice, representative of the
concepts of innovation, design, craftsman-
ship and performance engrained in Poltrona
Frau’s brand identity. Pelle Frau® Impact
Less leather causes the least possible impact
that this aspect of production can have on
the environment. It is a recycled material,
tanned with sustainable components and
without the use of chromium, in a process
that reduces the total use of chemicals by
15%. Total water consumption is also reduced
by 10%, thanks to cutting-edge wastewater
recovery technologies. In addition to these
achievements, there is the LCA analysis that
allows the company to compensate for the
CO2 created during its production cycle
regardless the eff orts for its minimisation,
through projects approved and certifi ed by
the United Nations Convention on Climate
Change. In March 2022, the LCA analysis of
Pelle Frau® Impact Less established a 10%
reduction of its CO2 emissions.
Pelle Frau® Impact Less leather is a
concrete symbol of Poltrona Frau’s strategic
path towards sustainability. The company is
committed to making all the leathers in its
collection “impact less” by the end of 2025,
with the goal of a 50% reduction in CO2
emissions by 2030.
