a water dispenser in each department. Each
solution adopted is therefore consistent with
the transition from a linear to a circular business
model.
The European Union Action Plan for a
circular economy, drafted in March 2020,
points out that up to 80% of environmental
impact reduction can be determined in the
design phase, minimising the use of raw
materials and planning the recycling chain of
waste and secondary raw materials. In addi-
tion to these premises are the consideration
of the product’s performance over time, i.e.,
the functional lifespan of the product and the
materials it is made of, as well as the product’s
ability to be disassembled and easily repaired
with replaceable parts during its useful life, and
disassembled at the end of its life to recycle
its components. The logic of circularity has
always been part of the design of Poltrona Frau
products, which are designed to be easily disas-
sembled at the end of their life, separating and
recycling waste, as well as to be repaired and
maintained throughout their life. At the same
time, designing furnishings with a timeless
aesthetic means transcending the fashions of
the moment and understanding the essence of
the form, knowing how to capture those “base
notes” that are capable of enduring over time
because they represent our material culture. As
highlighted in the Poltrona Frau catalogue, with
products such as the Chester sofa or the 1919
and Vanity Fair armchairs, as well as the more
recent Kennedee or Archibald. Knowing how
to produce timeless icons means being able to
interpret existing languages and knowledge,
such as the capitonnée motif, updating them
in a contemporary aesthetic. Sustainability
means giving a long lifespan to products, which
can also be expressed through services. Each
Poltrona Frau furnishing is supplied with a
maintenance kit with products that allow for
adequate care and cleaning. Every customer in
the world can change old upholstery or receive
special assistance from the company for any
minor damage.
Sustainability, therefore, as a critical
and structured process for a system-based
economy that extends to all the actors who
participate in it; sustainability as a business
revolution based primarily on cultural aware-
ness.
