ONE BOULDER AT A TIME. In a world where an Airbus A380 can takeoff
weighing over one million pounds, you’d think that we’d be mass-
producing the stunning onyx bowls we bring you in our Elements
Collection. That’s anything but the case, and a large part of what makes
our pieces so special.
In Southern Mexico, a tripod is assembled above a 150-foot vertical
drop – clearly not a job for the claustrophobic. Once at the base, only
one 200-pound boulder can be brought up at a time. The tripod cannot
support any additional weight and the excursion must be carefully
controlled, as there is a stream of water below, adding additional
challenges to the task.
Once above the rocks and safely on land, the carving can begin. These
boulders show no evidence of great beauty on the outside. The artisans
work with the natural striations to create the organic forms of the bowls.
