Presso il tempio Tōdaiji di Nara, in
Giappone, nel deposito imperiale dello
Shōsōin, è custodita una raccolta di
circa centomila frammenti di stoffe
risalenti al periodo Asuka e Nara (VII e
VIII sec.). Alcuni sono minuscoli, a volte
non più grandi di un francobollo, altri
sono aggrovigliati, usurati, sfilacciati.
Tutti sono considerati preziosi tesori
da tramandare alle generazioni future.
Già nell’antichità, con questi frammenti
venivano create composizioni la cui
bellezza nasceva dall’arte di saper
creare con ciò che si ha.
The imperial repository of Shōsōin at the
Tōdaiji Temple in Nara, Japan is home
to a collection of about one hundred
thousand pieces of fabric dating back
to the Asuka and Nara periods (VII and
VIII centuries). Some are tiny, at times no
bigger than a postage stamp, others are
tangled, worn or frayed, but all are thought
of as valuable treasures to pass on to
future generations. Since ancient times,
various compositions have been made
from these fragments, their beauty lying
in the ability to create from whatever
is at hand.
