Intorno alle mura della città si stende una cintura di giardini e di orti
coperti da una vegetazione meravigliosa. Sono lunghe file di aloe, simili a
lance gigantesche conficcate in mezzo a un fascio di enormi daghe ricur-
ve; lì nascono fichi d’India altissimi, con foglie spesse un pollice, che spor-
gono sui sentieri fin quasi a impedire il passaggio; fichi comuni, all’ombra
dei quali si potrebbero rizzare dieci tende; querce, acacie, oleandri, arbu-
sti d’ogni forma, che intrecciano i loro rami coi rami degli alberi più alti,
e formano con l’edera, le viti, le canne e le siepi paesaggi naturali sotto i
quali spariscono fossi e sentieri.

Around the city walls there is a belt of gardens and back gardens covered
with a wanderful vegetation. There are long lines of aloe, similar to gi-
gantic lances stuck in the middle of a sheaf of huge curved daggers; there
grow very high prickly pears with leaves an inch thick, stretching out on
the pathways almost preventing passing through; common fig-trees, in the
shadow of which ten tents could be mounted; oaks, acacias, oleanders,
bushes in any shape which interlace their branches with the branches of
the higher trees and form with ivy, vines, canes and hedges natural lan-
dscapes under which moats and pathways disappear.
