Levien nel 2010, Paper Planes nasce
dalla progettazione di un tessuto ispirato
alla carta millimetrata. Come un origami
fuori scala, la configurazione della
seduta deriva dal piegare e appuntire
la carta esplorando forme e strutture,
producendo angoli, linee, poligoni.
Una scultura funzionale che richiede,
nonostante l’apparente semplicità, una
magistrale abilità sartoriale. Durante
la fase di imbastitura le righe del
decoro, data la particolarità geometrica
della seduta, impongono la perfetta
convergenza, non lasciando al maestro
artigiano il minimo margine d’errore.
Designed by Nipa Doshi and
Jonathan Levien in 2010, Paper Planes
originated from a fabric design based
around graph paper. Like an outsized
origami piece, the configuration of the
seat derives from the act of folding and
adding sharp lines to the paper, playing
with forms and structures and producing
angles, lines and shapes. A functional
sculpture that, despite its seeming
simplicity, requires extraordinary
mastery of materials. Given the unique
shape of the seat, the tacking stage
for the decorative lines necessitates a
perfect alignment that leaves the master
craftsman no room for error.
