GiuseppePenonestartedhisworkinredefi-
ningsculpturealsobybeginningwiththe
earththatremainsinyournailswhenyou
dig.Hetookashisthemepreciselytheseele-
mentaryactionsandintroducedthemaspart
ofanobleartisticprocess.AliceCattaneo
startsfromthesamepremise,linkingher
sculptureanditslanguagetotheprocessof
transformation,toitsbecoming,andtothe
movementthatisenacteddirectlyinthe
spaceandisinventedandrecordedonvideo.
Inbothcases,theworkreflectstherelation-
shipbetweentheselfandtheother.Inthe
workofCattaneothechoiceofsmall-scale
asanareaofaction,andthestrategyofusing
weaknessasawaytoopenupanotherope-
rationalchoice,becomesimplementedwith
remarkableimmediacyandradicalismbe-
causeitreducestheartisticacttothemini-
malelementswehaveattemptedtodescribe.
Hersissensitivitytypicalofourtimes,when
suchchoicesinculturalspacesbecomepoli-
ticalinthebroadestsense,butalsointhe
strictest.
