cumentedaspartofthefilmitself.

The School of Narrative Dance
Themeetingbetweenthedisciplines,the
exchangeofknowledgeandskills,andthe
non-hierarchicalnatureoftherolesandthe
rethinkingoftherelationshipbetweentea-
chersandstudentshavealwaysbeenplaced
atthecenterofthecommunicationaccom-
panyingtheproductionofanyworkbyMa-
rinellaSenatore.Thepotentialthatthese
‘constructive’communitieshavewithinall
ofherprojectscouldgoonautonomously,
butinsteadbecomesthefocusofherambi-
tioninherpracticeasanartist.Itisthe
basisaroundwhichSenatorefoundedthe
SchoolofNarrativeDance:ameansforgi-
vingadurable‘sustainability’totheproces-
sestemporarilycreatedduringartisticpro-
jects.
Currentlysevenoftheseschoolsareesta-
blishedindifferentpartsoftheworld,from
theartisthavingbeeninvitedtovisitbyin-
stitutionsandbiennials.The‘school’isde-
signedasalocation(withnobuildingand
opentoall)inwhichtheeducationalgoalis
achievedthroughlearninghowtoconstruct
anappropriatenarrativethatisbothshared
andautonomous.Thedanceandthemove-
mentarepresentedasspeciallanguagesbe-
causetheyareabletoliberatetheseeduca-
tional ideas from a verbal and dialectic
dimensionthatismoreusefultounderstan-
ding(together)thantoknowledge.

Simu (That’s Us) e Variations aretwopro-
jectsinwhichthecollaborativemethodology
thatMarinellaSenatorelearnedbystudying
productionprocessesofcinemaattheCen-
troSperimentaleinRome,clearlyemerge.
AtEnna,withagroupofelderlyretiredmi-
ners,aswellasinNewYorkwiththediffe-
rentcommunitiesthatliveontheLowerEast
Side,theartisthasusedthefascinationand
“magic”thatthecameraarousesworldwide,
tomobilizepeople,groups,andassociations
aroundthesearchforacommonnarrative.
Bothvideos,asinotherworksbytheartist,
beganwiththecalltoparticipateinanau-
ditiontomakeacollectivefilm.Themethod
forcommunicatingwithpotentialcollabo-
ratorswasreinventedfromplacetoplace
andSenatorewasabletomovebetweenthe
atmosphereofNuovo Cinema Paradisoand
Fame (Saranno Famosi):usingacarloud-
speakertoannounceinstrictSiciliandia-
lect,goingdoor-to-door,usingtheradionews
ofthedistrict,andsocialevents.Theseare
amongtheapparatusthroughwhichthe
“spectacular”buildsexpectation,andSena-
torefromthebeginningrevealedstrategies
fortransformingitintoamethodtoforce
theestablishmentofarttorethinkitscom-
municationsystem,itsproperaudience,and
howtheyinteract.Eventhecasting wasbent
tothelogicoftheartistandthecompetitive
processofselectionbecomesthefirstmo-
mentofmeetingandlisteningtothosewho
decidedtoshowupandhavealreadybecome
partofthenarrative.
