avideoworkmadeduringaperiodofresi-
denceinChina.Thetitlecomesfromthe
textthatiswrittenonpublicflowerbedsin
thecountry.Thevigilantyetdistanteyeof
theartisthaswovenataleofparticulars,of
secrets,ofstolenmoments,andoftransitions.
Superfluousdetailsandtheirresidueare
madeactivetodeclaimtheextraordinaryvi-
sionarycompositionofthesefragments.
HisrecentmovetotheNetherlands(from
2010ManganohaslivedandworkedinAm-
sterdam)hasenrichedhisresearchwithex-
posuretotheutopianandtolerantorganiza-
tionalandcommunalsystemsofHolland.
VideossuchasWar Game (2012)andalso
Orderliness (2013)observesituationsunder
control,andinvestigatehowDutchculture
andsocietystudiedandexperimentedwith
thesystemtobuildastrongsocialstructure.
Veenhuizen (2013)wasoriginallyacolony
forthere-educationofthehomeless,built
inthenineteenthcentury,itlaterwastran-
sformedintoapenalcolonyandnowisana-
turalpark.Itisastratifiedplace,markedby
thepassageoftouristsandthepresenceof
newresidents.Theonlytracesthatremain
ofwhatwasareinscriptionsthatadornthe
facadesoftheperiodhouses,stillinhabited.
Thesearedozensofausteremoraljudgments,
suspendedinmetaphysicalclaritylikeim-
materialcaptions.
Recently,theartisthasbeenworkingona
trilogyoffilmsthatexplorementalillness
andanti-psychiatryfromtheseventiestothe
present.Manganocreatedthefirstfilmin
theseriesduringanartist’sresidencyatthe
KunsthuisSybinFriesland,supportedbythe
MondriaanFonds.Theartistspentfiveweeks
intheDeWissel,aspecializedcenterthat
housespeoplewithmentalandmultipledi-
sabilities.Theresultofthisendeavorcanbe
foundinthefilmBird singing, sandy ground,
(2014).Thefilmshowsusanautonomous
andpoeticmicrocosmlostintime,thepor-
traitofa‘magicalvillage’hiddenbehinda
forest.Thesecondfilmisinprogress;thear-
tistiscurrentlyanartist-inresidencesup-
portedbytheMondriaanFonds,atHetVijfde
Seizoen,anhistoricalpsychiatricinstitution
nearUtrecht.Thethirdandlastpartwillbe
inCuracao,formerNetherlandsAntilles.
TheartofManganocollects,registers,tran-
slates,reveals,andintheendinitiatesanal-
ternativespace:aplacewhererealityand
artificearecombinedtoformanewworld
andstimulateanindependentvision.Thear-
tistdoesnotreproduceconventions,butsets
inmotiontheimagination,enliveningaspace
thatisfreedfromitseverydayrole.Mangano
seemstoreworkLefebvre’sthought,extrac-
tingtheimaginarypotentialineverydaylife
andproducinganewspacethatpointstoa
differentperceptionofreality.
