Un passo necessario per la crescita dei bambini è metterli in contatto,
quanto prima, con la natura. Nella società moderna i bambini, spesso,
vivono lontani dalla natura ed hanno poche occasioni di entrare in
contatto con l’ambiente o di averne una diretta esperienza. Uno dei principi
fondamentali della pedagogia che si ispira a Maria Montessori sostiene
proprio l’importanza di alimentare “il sentimento della natura” nei bambini.
E questo sentimento non può essere trasmesso semplicemente attraverso
la descrizione o il racconto, ma va nutrito con l’esperienza diretta. Bisogna
pensare a momenti, nella vita dei bambini, dedicati alla cura delle piante
e, specialmente, degli animali affinché sviluppino la consapevolezza
che le piante e gli animali hanno bisogno di loro, che la loro attenzione
e cura è importante. Il “sentimento della natura” è inteso proprio come
attenzione, rispetto e curiosità verso ciò che vive nel mondo attorno a noi.
È semplicemente questo il percorso che può portare il bambino (e futuro
adulto) ad una maggiore consapevolezza dell’importanza di salvaguardare
la natura e tutto quello che in essa vive e cresce. Dall’amore per la natura alla
sensibilità ecologica il passo è breve.
Putting children into close contact with nature as early as possible
is an essential stage in their growth. Our modern society means that
children often live a long way from nature and don’t have so many chances
to enjoy hands-on contact with the environment or to experience it
directly. One of the fundamental principles in the pedagogy based on
the work of Maria Montessori talks about the importance of feeding a
child’s “feel for nature”. This is a feeling that can’t be transmitted just by
describing it or telling it in a story, it needs to be demonstrated with direct
experience. We need to think about the moments in a child’s life that we
can dedicate to looking after plants and, even more so, animals, so that
they develop awareness that plants and animals need them, that care and
attention for them is important. This “feel for nature” is understood as
attention to those who live in the world around us, as well as respect and
curiosity. It is simply a path that can lead children (the adults of the future)
to have a better awareness of the importance of safeguarding nature
and everything that lives and grows in it. And it’s a short step from loving
nature to eco-awareness
