NEW CONCEPT
For centuries, forests, mountains, and the most unexpected corners
of Japan have been said to harbor creatures that defy all logic. Known
as yõkai, these supernatural beings can take on the most extraordi-
nary forms.
Central to legends and folklore, yõkai embody the mysteries of the world
and reflect the intuitive and symbolic side of Japanese popular culture.
Some provoke, others protect, and all spark the imagination. Attributing
magical powers, whimsical humor, or ancient wisdom to them is part of
a tradition that remains very much alive.
One of the best-known yõkai is Tengu, a mountain spirit with avian
features, famous for its prominent nose and defiant temper. This inter-
pretation in matte porcelain reimagines the legendary Tengu through
a contemporary lens, emphasizing refined forms with a strong visual
impact. The use of solid colors such as pistachio green, white, and
black enhances this clean aesthetic and creates a vibrant contrast.
The hand-carved wings recall the original character, adding texture,
volume, and dynamism. The glazed finish on the face and horns intro-
duces a play of light that heightens the expressiveness of the piece.
Through lines, colors, and form, this particular Tengu off ers a contem-
porary vision of an ancient and fascinating universe. A creation that
bridges past and present through the language of design.
