La Reina del Nilo
The chronicles of the time go that when Julius Caesar, the
leader of the most powerful empire in the world, visited
Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, he was astounded by the splendor
of a court that, even though it was going through a moment
of decadence, still preserved the grandeur and magnificence
of centuries of refined civilization. A magnificence that even
today, when the palaces and temples of the land of the Nile
have been covered by desert sand for many centuries, still
fascinate us and make us dream. It should therefore come as
no surprise that the artists of The City of Porcelain chose this
subject matter as a source of inspiration for one of the most
ambitious works undertaken by Lladró.
Queen of the Nile is a breath-taking piece, a spectacular 160
centimeters long composition recreating the dazzling look of
an Egyptian boat. In it, Nefertari, Great Royal Wife of Ramses
II, together with her children and entourage, journeys down
the Nile with all the sumptuousness of the imperial court.
Nefertari was this Pharaoh’s great love. But she was also a
brilliant political mind and took on a strategic role that no
woman would play again until the arrival of Cleopatra.
Cuando Julio César, entonces al frente del imperio más poderoso
de su época, visitó a Cleopatra, reina de Egipto, quedó asombrado
ante la magnificencia de una corte que, aún en un momento de
decadencia, conservaba la grandeza y el esplendor de siglos de
refinada civilización. Un esplendor que aún hoy, cuando hace ya
mucho tiempo que las arenas del desierto cubrieron los palacios y
los templos del país del Nilo, nos fascina y nos hace soñar. No es
extraño, por tanto, que los artistas de La Ciudad de la Porcelana
eligieran este tema como fuente de inspiración para las obras más
ambiciosas emprendidas por Lladró.
La reina del Nilo es una obra monumental, una espectacular
composición de 160 centímetros de largo que recrea el
deslumbrante aspecto de una embarcación egipcia. En ella,
Nefertari, la Gran Esposa Real de Ramsés II, acompañada por
sus hijos y su séquito, pasea por el Nilo con todo el fasto de la corte
imperial. Nefertari fue el gran amor de este Faraón, pero además
fue una brillante mente política y asumió un papel estratégico
que ninguna mujer volvería a tener hasta Cleopatra.
