Arte & Culto | Lighting for statues and monuments
The night-time illumination of statues, monuments and commemorative
buildings serves not only to display – and therefore make usable – what is to
all intents and purposes part of the architectural/artistic heritage of a given
place, but also to enhance their beauty. At nightfall, it becomes possible to
consciously use shadows and the interplay of light and darkness created by
artificial lighting to give depth and importance to the entire building. Statues
appear to ‘emerge’ from the darkness and their physicality is emphasised
through the juxtaposition of light and shadow. The shapes and details of
statues and symbolic monuments cannot be enhanced without properly
understanding the material they are made from, their relationship to the
general/environmental lighting, and the desired scenic effect.
