Arte & Culto | Lighting in places of worship
Lighting gives definition to shapes,
emphasises silhouettes and –
especially in nocturnal contexts –
defines what is visible. It can create
different moods to suit a variety of
occasions, thus providing a useful
way to alter the outward appearance
of an architectural structure. Below,
two different light renderings show
how the appearance of the domes,
minarets and arches of the Sharjah
Mosque can change after adjusting
different sets of luminaires. During
the design phase it is important to
always produce simulations whose
objective – attention! – is not to
provide a visually pleasing realistic
image, but to enable the end user
to understand the behaviour of
lights and lighting systems in a given
environment.
