The Magi Chapel is a well-kept
secret located on the main floor
of the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi
in Florence. With no windows or
façades, the Chapel is reminiscent
of a treasure chest of artworks.
Indeed, this 40 square metre space
is brimming with 15th-century art,
including the frescoes of Benozzo
Gozzoli, a pupil of Beato Angelico.
On three walls of the Chapel, visitors
can admire his depictions of the
Project study:
Magi Chapel
cavalcade of the Magi, which bears
similarities to the procession of Pope
Pius II Piccolomini, who arrived in
Florence in April 1458.
The aim of the project, promoted
by the Metropolitan City of Florence
and implemented in collaboration
with MUS.E, was to design an
illumination system that would, quite
literally, shed new light on the Magi
Chapel. Right from the start of the
initial assessment phase, Linea
Light Group was able to rely on its
expertise to take this internationally
renowned masterpiece to the next
level. The project features a system
of seven custom-made turrets
at different heights, each holding
four Optus projectors, positioned
throughout the space and controlled
via Bluetooth and smartphone apps.
Lamps and housing structures were
painted to match the colours of the
flooring.

The previous lights, which hindered
the works being enjoyed, have
been substituted with smaller units
offering the ability to adjust the
direction and strength of the lighting
in addition to controlling the staging
through scene planning.
