In the late 1800s, a ruthless, all-female gang
called The Forty Elephants ran London’s
biggest shoplifting racket. Diamonds, gold,
crystals, and cash, all would be tucked away
in the girders and muff s of the ladies’ Victorian
garments, and LASVIT has commemorated this
strange chapter in London’s criminal history
with the installation Diamond’s Hostage,
now hanging in the Great Scotland Yard Hotel.
Glass is now a girl’s best friend.
