In 1884, Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro, an artist with an
unconventional spirit, founded, with his brother, the “Fábrica
de Faianças” in Caldas da Rainha in memory of their father, a
ceramic craftsman.
Raphael’s dream was to enhance everyday tableware with
designs deeply rooted in Portuguese culture: the culinary
heritage and the natural environment. He wanted to see
vegetables, flowers and animals on the table, so he started to
create these pieces, which were an immediate success and an
outstanding example of 19th-century Portuguese legacy.
Today, Bordallo Pinheiro continues its history, remaining faithful
to its traditional techniques and original naturalistic designs
while reinventing itself with modern techniques and new
aesthetics.
