Twenty years on from the setting of Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 seminal film 2001: A Space Odyssey, we are still debating the meaning of this cinematic
masterpiece. Ahead of its time not only in subject matter, it was heralded for its pioneering treatment employing long periods of music instead of dialogue and realistic special
effects as well as its themes of AI and possibility of extra-terrestrial life. As an alien black monolith lands amongst a tribe of prehistoric ape-men it sets off a chain of events,
notably the discovery of fire and how that aids the preparation of food.
