The Etruscans were fundamentally innovators. Highly sophisticated arbiters of taste they were keen collectors of Greek pottery, so much so that you
find more ancient pieces in Italy than in Greece itself. With sharp business minds, they soon worked out that it was more economical to relocate the artist or artisan to their
own territory than to import vases. They began to stamp pottery with the name of the artist, and branding was born, quickly becoming an Etruscan leitmotif. The endeavours
and vast territorial reach of the Romans is widely celebrated, yet here I share some insights on the Etruscans’ profound influence on Roman culture and history.
