“The art of calligraphy is not merely writing words through lines; it is the art of
expressing one’s character and spirit through the movement of the brush: In the
world of calligraphy, the line is the heartbeat, and the motive is the soul.”
From the iconic words from Korean master calligraphers and in
conversation with the work of Korean contemporary master Lee Bae,
whose recent series “Brushstroke” epitomizes such spirit like no one else,
Cristiana Giopato and Christopher Coombes designed a kaleidoscopic
journey into light, time, and memory.
In this cross-cultural encounter, they found resonance between their
creative practice and the calligraphic gesture, where the artwork is a result
of merging matter and fragments of memory from the inner self.
The exhibition presents five light creations that emanate a suspension aura
and recalls the timeless essence of calligraphy, balancing between conscious
and unconscious gestures, letting go of their ego between pictorial
repetition and free experimentation.
