The Brazilian furniture and objects design studio ALVA
was founded in 2012 by sibling Susana Bastos, artist and
fashion designer, and Marcelo Alvarenga, architect.
For Gardeco, ALVA conceived the AOI and AMORFA-
lines consisting of beautiful vases in soft soapstone, a
natural crystalline rock sourced locally in the region of
Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Using a lathe and scraping tools, solid blocks of
soapstone are turned into strikingly beautiful creations
with stand-out silhouettes. The colour of soapstone can
vary from a gentle beige to bright blue and silvery grey.
