Made by tightly weaving the weft
with the yarns on the loom to produ-
ce a flat, pile-free rug. The technique
is very similar to that used to manufac-
ture upholstery fabrics, and for this re-
ason the artisans that use it are often
very skilled at creating small details.
They allow for all kinds of patterns and
colours and are light but very resistant
rugs.

la trama con los hilos en el telar para
producir una alfombra plana, sin pelo.
La técnica es muy similar a la que se
utiliza en la fabricación de telas para
tapicerías y por eso los artesanos sue-
len ser muy hábiles con los pequeños
detalles. Permiten todo tipo de dibu-
jos y colores y son alfombras ligeras
pero muy resistentes.

Hand-operated looms. In some ca-
ses the yarn is held to the warp rolled
around a rod that determines the hei-
ght of the pile of the rug. In others it
is simply crossed over. This technique
can be used to create numerous fini-
shes, from flat pieces with thick yarn
which is knotted, cut, braided or loo-
ped.

bre enrollándolo alrededor de una
varilla que determina la altura del pelo

Hand-knotted
Handmade on a vertical loom on
which the wool is fastened firmly to
the warp through a knot. The shape
and thickness of the knot differentia-
te the various kinds of hand-knotted
rugs; more knots result in greater de-
finition and a longer-lasting, more va-
luable rug. This technique allows very
detailed designs to be created.
Tejido manual en telar vertical en el
que el pelo se sujeta fuertemente a
la urdimbre mediante un nudo. La
forma y el grosor del nudo diferencian
las distintas clases de alfombras anu-
dadas a mano; a mayor número de
nudos, mayor definición, durabilidad

Sumak
A technique traditionally used to crea-
te decorative, durable and thick rugs
and carpets. It produces a flat wea-
ve, similar to a kilim but stronger and
thicker, with a smooth frontal face
and an irregular back. It is woven with
coloured weft threads above and be-
low the warp threads, creating streng-
th and an embroidery-like pattern.
Una técnica tradicionalmente em-
pleada para crear tapices y alfombras
decorativas, duraderas y de cierto
grosor. Un tipo de tejido plano, pare-
cido al kilim pero más fuerte y grueso,
con una cara frontal lisa y un dorso
irregular. Se teje con hilos de trama de
colores por encima y por debajo de los
hilos de urdimbre, creando resistencia
y un patrón similar a un bordado.

Hand-tufted
A manual process that uses a tufting
gun on a stretched cotton fabric to
shoot and cut a portion of wool fo-
llowing the desired pattern. The wool
is fixed to the base by a layer of latex.
This technique allows for different hei-
ghts, loop finishes and all designs and
colours.
Proceso manual que sobre una tela
de algodón tensada, se sirve de la
‘tufting gun’, una especie de pistola,
para disparar y cortar una porción de
lana siguiendo el dibujo que se desee.
La lana se fija a la base mediante una
capa de látex. Permite diferentes al-
turas, acabados en bucle y todos los
diseños y colores.
