You enter again into the world
of rugs to change volume,
scale, using softer and more
flexible materials that contrast
with the rigidity your jewels are
made of. From giving light and
dressing the body, to giving
light and dressing spaces. Do
you feel that way?
WEAVE features different textu-
res in each of the rugs and the
combination of geometries is
equally important in the collec-
tion. Where does the inspiration
for WEAVE and its two models,
SPACE HOPPER and MEETING
POINT, come from?
In terms of color, SPACE HOPPER
and MEETING POINT are co-
lorful in both their cooler (Blue)
and warmer (Orange) variations.
We would like to know more
about the chosen color palette.
Was it clear to you from the
start that you wanted to work
with wool - a material you refer
to as one of your "must-haves"
- and the hand loom technique?
You like to convey the sincerity of
the most authentic craftsmanship,
create outside of fleeting trends
and promote environmentally and
socially responsible practices in
your designs. You value durability,
as evidenced by your appreciation
for your weaver mother's textiles,
which you still preserve. All of this
resonates deeply in GAN's DNA.
What emotions have you expe-
rienced when immersing yourself
in GAN's artisanal world?
EXACTLY, I FEEL THAT OBJECTS GIVE CHARACTER TO SPACES,
AND RUGS ARE THE PIECES THAT BEST MATERIALIZE THIS
TRANSFORMATION. THEY FUNCTION AS PAINTINGS OF ART ON
THE FLOOR, BRINGING LIGHT AND WARMTH.
THE PRIMARY INSPIRATION OF WEAVE HAS BEEN TO HIGHLIGHT
THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SEQUENCES THAT CAN BE CARRIED OUT
IN A LOOM. IT IS PURE MATHEMATICS. THE VARIED TEXTURES
PROVIDE DEPTH TO THE COLORS BY PLAYING WITH THE LIGHT.
IT MUST BE REMEMBERED THAT THE RUGS ARE ALWAYS EXPE-
RIENCED THROUGH A SPACE AND PARTICULAR ANGLE OF VISION.
IT IS MAGICAL TO SEE HOW THE LIGHT PLAYS AND HOW THE
DESIGN CHANGES DEPENDING ON THE PATTERN OF THE WEAVE.
THE SECOND INSPIRATION CAME FROM GEOMETRIC PATTER-
NS OF CONFLICTING COLORS, AS IF IT WERE A PATCHWORK OF
DIFFERENT FABRICS SEWN TOGETHER. IN FACT, MY DRAWINGS
SUGGESTED THAT IT SHOULD BE DONE THIS WAY, AND MY SUR-
PRISE WAS IMMENSE WHEN I SAW THAT THE ARTISANS HAD MA-
NAGED TO WEAVE IT ON A SINGLE LOOM PLAIN.
AS FAR AS COLOR IS CONCERNED, IT WAS INTENTIONAL TO USE
VIBRANT AND POWDERY COLORS. AT HOME I LIVE WITH LIGHT
AND NEUTRAL FURNITURE AND WALLS AND IT IS THE TEXTILE
DETAILS OR ARTWORKS THAT ADD LIGHT TO THE SPACE WITH
THEIR COLORS.
I AM OBSESSED WITH THE COLOR KETTLE FOR DECORATING
AND, IN MIXING IT WITH PINK, IT BECOMES POSITIVE AND VI-
BRANT: PURE VIVIDNESS, EARTHY, CHEERFUL AND STABLE. THIS
WOULD BE THE WARM VARIANT. THE COOLER VARIANT TAKES MY
COLOR WATER, SO RECURRENT, COMBINED WITH A CLEAN BLUE:
HERE IS THE SEA, THE SKY, THE FRESHNESS, THE TRANQUILITY.
IT IS A PROPOSAL FOR A QUIET AND ELEGANT DANCE OF COLOR.
WOOL IS A WONDERFUL, HONEST AND RAW FIBER THAT ALLOWS
FOR MANY NEW DEVELOPMENTS. I LOVE THAT AT WEAVE THE
RUGS ARE THIN AND COMPACT, DISCREET YET VIBRANT. THEY
ACCOMMODATE THE SPACE WITHOUT OVERPOWERING IT.
I HAVE EXPERIMENTED WITH AN OPEN AND RISKY CREATIVE
PROPOSAL. WE TALKED ABOUT THE CONCEPT, DESIGNED, AND
STUDIED THE DIFFERENT KNOTS... BUT IN THE END IT WAS ES-
SENTIAL TO LEAVE FREEDOM TO THE ARTISAN. WE HAVE OPENED
THE POSSIBILITY FOR HIM OR HER TO INTERPRET IT AS WELL.
IT IS IMPORTANT IN DESIGN TO LISTEN, NOT ONLY TO THE
MATERIAL, BUT ALSO TO ACCOMPANY THE HANDS THAT CREATE
THE PIECE. IT IS ALWAYS A MAGICAL MOMENT AND OPENS UP
WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITIES. ART, AFTER ALL, RESIDES IN THE
EYES OF EACH INDIVIDUAL.
IT HAS BEEN A PLEASURE TO DO THIS PROJECT. EVERY
STEP HAS BEEN SURPRISING AND EXCITING.
