In der Hamburger Wohnung der Galeristin passt kaum etwas
zusammen und doch fühlt man sich gleich wohl. Ein Sam-
melsurium aus Altem und Neuem, so schön zusammengestellt,
dass das Auge kaum ruhen mag. Wir haben mit Katharina Her-
old gesprochen.
Eine vermeintlich einfache Frage: Was bedeuted für dich Kunst?
Es klingt vielleicht übertrieben, aber: eigentlich alles! Jeder Tag
in meinem Leben ist ausgerichtet auf Kunst.
Auf Sylt hast du lange eine Galerie geführt. Die Zweig-
stelle führt ihr in Hamburg als Familie. In die Kunstwelt bist du
quasi hineingeboren. Was denkst du, inwiefern dich das bee-
influsst hat?
Ich glaube, ich lebe eine fast kindliche Herangehensweise,
wenn es um Kunst geht. Mein schottischer Großvater hat im-
mer gesagt: „Always stay curious.“ Diesen Satz habe ich in mich
aufgesogen.
Wie war deine Kindheit mit Kunst?
Daran erinnere ich mich ganz gut. Mein Vater sammelt Hocker,
also kleine Schemel und solche Dinge. Es stand immer irgendwo
ein Hocker, den ich mir genommen habe, um die Tür seines
Sammlerschranks zu öffnen und mir verschiedene Objekte
herauszunehmen. Ich musste alles wissen.
Hardly anything fits together in the gallery owner’s Ham-
burg apartment, and yet it kind of does and you feel at home
straight away. A smorgasbord of old and new, so beautifully
put together that the eye can hardly rest. We visited Katharina
Herold.
Let’s begin with a question that’s simple, but quite possibly
also the most difficult: What does art mean to you?
It may sound a little over the top, but art is everything to me!
Art is at the center of my everyday life.
You managed a gallery in Sylt for a long time. A branch of the
gallery you as a family manage in Hamburg. You were basi-
cally born into the world of art. In what way do you think that
shaped your understanding of art?
I think my approach to art is almost childlike when it comes to
art. My Scottish grandfather used to say: “Always stay curious.”
And I think I’ve really internalized that idea.
What was your childhood like with art?
It’s still fresh in my mind. My father collected stools – little
footstools, milking stools, and things like that. So, there was
always a stool somewhere I could use to reach the door of his
collector’s cabinet and then take out all of the different pieces.
I had to know everything.
