direzione, registra presenze record. Il ‘Salone
Satellite’, da lui fortemente voluto, diventa la più
ambita vetrina per giovani designer e progettisti
provenienti da tutto il mondo.

‘Istituto Tecnico Superiore’ intitolata a
Rosario Messina.

ROSARIO MESSINA
Nato nel 1942 in Sicilia, ad Aci Castello, primogenito di sei figli, alla prematura scomparsa
del padre, imprenditore agricolo, si trova giovanissimo alla guida della famiglia.
Entra come apprendista a sedici anni alla ‘Rinascente’ di Catania dove è presto promosso
commesso poi caporeparto. Intanto frequenta corsi serali e si diploma in tempi record in
ragioneria. Lasciata ‘la Rinascente’, diventa funzionario Zanussi-Rex, l’allora più importante
industria di elettrodomestici. Ai primi anni Settanta è chiamato al nord dalla C&B Italia (oggi
B&B Italia) dove assume l’incarico di funzionario vendite per la Sicilia e la Calabria: è il
debutto nel settore dell’arredamento. Nel 1976 passa in Cinova, altra primaria industria di
design, della quale diventa direttore commerciale con responsabilità gestionali.
La svolta avviene quando la Bassetti gli affida il compito di lanciare il ‘piumone’, un prodotto
innovativo destinato a sostituire la tradizionale coperta per il letto.
L’incarico si rivela complesso a causa dell’indisponibilità dei rivenditori di mobili - il canale
distributivo dove si intendeva commercializzare il piumone - a trattare un prodotto considerato
poco remunerativo, oltre tutto già presente nei negozi di biancheria.
Al contrario Messina riteneva invece che vendere non il piumone, ma ‘un letto completo di
piumone’ fosse un’intuizione formidabile. Questa idea, coerentemente sviluppata, lo portò nel
1978 a fondare la Flou, nata in contemporanea al lancio sul mercato di ‘Nathalie’, il letto
disegnato da Vico Magistretti, tuttora considerato il capostipite di tutti i ‘letti tessili moderni’,
tipologia che in breve sarebbe divenuta uno standard. Pioniera di una nuova cultura del dormire,
Flou ha conquistato un posto d’onore nel panorama dell’arredamento contemporaneo, dando un
significativo contributo alla promozione del design italiano nel mondo.

Salone Internazionale del Mobile Milano. Under his
Presidency, the Salone and the collateral events were
transformed from Trade Exhibitions to the current
spectacular events that promote the city of Milan
as the ‘Capital of Design’. The 2011 edition, his last
one as its President, drew record attendance. He
personally drove forward the ‘Salone Satellite’, an
initiative that has become the most desirable window
for young designers and architects around the world.

ROSARIO MESSINA
He was born in 1942, in the town of Aci Castello, Sicily. He was the eldest of 6 children.
Following the premature death of his father, who ran a flourishing farming business, at a young
age, Rosario became the head of the family. At age 16, he joined the Catania branch of the
department store ‘la Rinascente’ as an apprentice. He was soon promoted to the position of shop
assistant and subsequently as head of department. At the same time, he attended evening classes
and was awarded his High School Diploma in bookkeeping in record time. He left ‘la Rinascente’
to join Zanussi-Rex as a corporate executive. The company was one of Italy’s most important
industries for electrical appliances. In the early 70s, he took up a post as a sales agent for C&B
Italia (now known as B&B Italia) in Northern Italy. He was responsible for Sicily and Calabria
in the south. This move marked his debut into the world of furnishings. In 1976, he changed jobs
again and joined Cinova, another design company. His position was commercial director with
management responsibilities. However, the turning point in his career came when he was contac-
ted by the Italian soft furnishing company, Bassetti. They asked him to promote an
innovative product - the Duvet - destined to replace traditional bed blankets. The initiative
proved to be more complex than expected due to the reluctance of furniture retailers - the
distribution channel selected - to stock and promote this item. There was little profit associated
with the sales and it was already stocked in specialist soft furnishing stores.
However, Messina thought differently: he believed that the focus should shift from selling
duvets to selling ‘a bed complete with duvet’. It was a stroke of genius and formidable intuition.
He ran with this idea that ultimately led to the foundation in 1978 of his company Flou, in
tandem with the launch of ‘Nathalie’, the original textile bed designed by Vico Magistretti. And
now, even though 40 years have passed, this bed is still evergreen, with this innovative article
quickly becoming the gold standard. As the pioneer of a new culture of sleep, Flou achieved a
position of due respect on the horizon of contemporary furnishings and has constantly made a
significant contribution to the promotion of Italian design around the world.
