L’idea di inserire il piumone nei negozi
d’arredamento non incontra troppo favore.
Ci sono molte perplessità: innanzi tutto per il
valore unitario relativamente basso dell’oggetto
in questione, poi per il rischio di mettersi in
concorrenza con i negozi specializzati in
biancheria. Messina allora trova la soluzione:
«Se devi vendere una cintura di sicurezza hai
bisogno dell’automobile su cui fissarla», ricorderà
anni dopo. «Io dovevo vendere un piumone:
quindi avevo bisogno del letto».
C’è bisogno di un letto pensato apposta per il
Piumone.
Per questa iniziativa Messina mette insieme una
cordata di imprenditori da affiancare a Bassetti:
Achille Locatelli, proprietario della Politex,
l’azienda che fornisce l’imbottitura per il
Piumone; Osvaldo Mastrangelo, titolare della
Interflex, produttore di materassi e di una
piccola linea di letti.
Per la progettazione viene scelto Vico Magistretti,
a quell’epoca uno dei designer italiani di maggior
successo, che sta vivendo una stagione
particolarmente felice: sono del 1977 la lampada
‘Atollo’ e la libreria ‘Nuvola Rossa’, oggetti che
hanno fatto la storia del gusto.
A quell’epoca i letti moderni, come si vede
sfogliando le riviste di quegli anni, erano in legno
o in metallo.
The reaction to the idea of distributing duvets
through furniture retailers was lukewarm, to be
honest. There were numerous concerns:
particularly for the relatively low unitary value
of the duvets; then there was the risk of
competition from the specialist soft household
furnishing and bedwear companies. Messina
recognized the problem and found the solution.
He described it some years later: «If you are
selling a safety belt, you will need to have a
vehicle as it is of little use on its own.
I wanted to sell duvets so I needed a bed».
So the bed had to be designed specifically for the
Duvet. To extrapolate his ideas, Messina grouped
together a number of entrepreneurs to join him
in this project for Bassetti: Achille Locatelli,
proprietor of Politex, the company that supplied
Duvet fillings; Osvaldo Mastrangelo, of Interflex,
a manufacturer of mattresses and a small range
of beds. The designer chosen for the project was
Vico Magistretti, at that time one of Italy’s most
successful creatives who was enjoying enormous
global recognition: two of his designs - the lamp
‘Atollo’ and the bookcase ‘Nuvola Rossa’ - date
back to 1977, and made an important
contribution to the history of style and taste in
Italy and across the world.
During that period, modern beds were either
wood or metal, as can be seen in the design
magazines published at that time.
In one of the first meetings, Magistretti quickly
threw down a sketch on a piece of paper - it
consisted of two oval shapes.
