Rosario Messina è stato un capitano d’azienda,
ha ricoperto cariche e ricevuto onorificenze
importanti. Un uomo pubblico.
Ma cercando negli archivi e nei ricordi della
famiglia immagini che raccontassero il
personaggio com’era anche fuori dai riflettori
è emersa una fotografia inattesa. Bellissima.
È un ritratto in posa, realizzato in studio.
Messina qui avrà otto, nove anni.
È uno scatto che colpisce perché, in filigrana, ci
si leggono tante cose.
Vediamo un bambino che, con la pipa in bocca
(col fumo che ha tutta l’aria di essere stato
aggiunto dal fotografo, ritoccando il negativo),
gioca a fare l’uomo: atteggiamento riflessivo,
figura composta.
Forse l’idea di farsi fotografare come un adulto
non è stata sua; ma sembra davvero di vedere
qualcuno che già pensa in grande.
Vediamo i pantaloncini corti, i calzini abbassati
un po’ da monello, la camicia scozzese.
Ma il punto focale di tutto lo scatto è solo uno:
i suoi occhi, che magnetici si agganciano a quelli
di chi guarda e non li lasciano più.
Rosario Messina was undeniably a Captain at
the helm of his company; he has held important
positions and received countless prestigious awa-
rds and endless recognition. He was very much a
public figure. Yet as we peruse the
archives and listen to the memories of his family,
a wonderful photograph appears and epitomizes
who he was away from the spotlight.
It is a beautiful image - a studio portrait of
Messina as a young boy aged eight or nine years
of age.
The picture is eye-catching because a lot of
information emerges from between the lines. We
see a young child with a pipe in his mouth (with
a spiral of smoke that may have been added to
the photograph later by retouching the negative);
he is pretending to be a man: he has a reflective
attitude and a composed appearance.
The idea of being photographed as an adult was
probably not his own; however, he looks like
someone who is already dreaming big. We see the
short trousers, his socks down around his ankles
in a cheeky twist, the checked shirt.
However, there is just one focal point in the shot
- his magnetic eyes connect with every observer
and do not release them.
