At first sight, it seems an ancient Mediterranean
town. Surrounded by a mountainous frame, the bell
tower and the church dome with its bright blue tiles
dominate the architectural ensemble, organised
around several plazas with fountains, orange trees and
palm trees. Courtyards festooned with arched porticoes
and colourful façades, small squares, pergolas, turrets
and even a stretch of wall round off the architecture
of this fantastic place, overlooking the bay of the Costa
Blanca.
The intention of its architects, Andrés and Juan
Carlos Piñeiro, was to reproduce historic buildings of
the region, such as the Almudín, an old grain store
dating back to the 14th century which is currently
located just behind the Basilica of Our Lady of the
Forsaken in Valencia; the cloister of the orange trees in
the ancient monastery of Saint Dominic (Orihuela), in
between the Renaissance and the Baroque; the dome
of the famous church of Our Lady of Consolation in
Altea; the Gothic palace of the Earls of Cocentaina;
the municipal palace of Villena with its magnificent
columns and arcades; and Alzira’s town hall, a beautiful
manor house evoking the Italian Renaissance.
A simple vista, parece un antiguo pueblo mediterráneo.
Enmarcado por la montaña, el campanario y la cúpula
de la iglesia con sus brillantes tejas azules dominan
el conjunto arquitectónico, estructurado alrededor de
varias plazas con fuentes, naranjos y palmeras. Patios
porticados y fachadas coloristas, plazoletas, pérgolas,
torreones e incluso un tramo de muralla completan
la arquitectura de este fantástico lugar, con vistas a la
Gran Bahía de la Costa Blanca.
Y es que la intención de sus arquitectos, Andrés y
Juan Carlos Piñeiro, era reproducir edificios históricos
de la Comunidad Valenciana, como el Almudín,
almacén de trigo construido en el siglo XIV y que hoy
se encuentra justo detrás de la Basílica de la Virgen
en Valencia; el claustro de los naranjos del antiguo
convento de Santo Domingo de Orihuela, de estilo
entre renacentista y barroco; la cúpula de la famosa
iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Consuelo en Altea; el
palacio gótico de los Condes de Cocentaina; el palacio
municipal de Villena con sus magníficas columnas y
arcadas; y el ayuntamiento de Alzira, un palacete que
evoca el estilo renacentista italiano.
