El sueño de
Sorolla
Sorolla captured the essence of the Mediterranean like
nobody has ever done. The light soaking through the
surface of his canvases is the same exact light which
today floods the 21 rooms of the hotel Balandret with
its windows opened to the blue vastness of the sea
and the sky of Valencia. In fact, its name as a direct
allusion to one of the most famous paintings of the
Valencian artist called El Balandrito (“The little sloop”),
which depicts a child playing with a small sailing boat
by the shore of a vibrant sea.
Just like Sorolla, interior designer Carlos Serra, from
the Valencia-based studio Mercader de Indias, brings
to the inside of this hotel boutique that special quality
of light together with some characteristic elements
of the typical Valencian imagery: “The moment I
was commissioned the project, I was asked to make
it really Valencian. I wanted to give it that air, but
deconstructed. All the elements are present, from the
earthenware pitcher to the orange baskets, the mosaic,
etc., but avoiding what might seem too typical”.
Sorolla supo plasmar como nadie la esencia del
Mediterráneo. La luz que traspasa la superficie de
sus lienzos es la misma luz que hoy inunda las 21
habitaciones del hotel Balandret, un hotel cuyas
ventanas se abren a la inmensidad azul del mar y
el cielo de Valencia. De hecho, su nombre es una
referencia directa a una conocida pintura del artista
valenciano, El Balandrito, aquella en la que se ve a
un niño jugando con un barquito en la orilla de un
mar vibrante.
Como Sorolla, el interiorista Carlos Serra, junto a su
equipo en el estudio valenciano Mercader de Indias,
lleva al interior de este hotel boutique, las cualidades
de esta luz tan especial a la que une elementos
representativos de la imaginería típica valenciana:
“En el momento en que me encargaron el proyecto,
me pidieron que fuera muy valenciano. Quise darle
ese aire, pero deconstruido. Están todos los elementos,
desde el botijo, a los capazos de naranjas, el mosaico,
etc., pero sin caer en lo típico”, explica el diseñador. Una
decoración que es todo un homenaje contemporáneo
a la cultura valenciana.
