Barbassa: siglos
de calma
To the North of the isle of Mallorca, through an unpaved
road crawling among olive trees, almond trees and
locusts, visitors drive into Cases de Son Barbassa, a
small rural hotel, a desert in that sense Carmelite
monks gave to the concept, in reference to those places
far from the madding crowd where they used to retire
for praying. It is a wilderness bulging with old stones
and legends dating back to prehistory when the first
dwellers erected here a Talaiotic sanctuary.
This typical ensemble of farmhouses was born
under the aegis of a defense tower built in the 16th
century with the aim of sheltering the locals against
the raids of Berber pirates who back then ravaged
the Mediterranean. From its vantage point, the estate,
nestled in the Llevant Natural Park, dominates the
medieval precinct of Capdepera just a few miles away
from the Artà caves and the beautiful beaches of Cala
Agulla and Cala Mesquida.
Al norte de la isla de Mallorca, por una senda sin
asfaltar, entre olivos, almendros y algarrobos, se accede
al pequeño hotel rural Cases de Son Barbassa, un
desierto en el sentido en que lo usaban los monjes
carmelitas como alusión a aquellos lugares alejados
del mundanal ruido donde se retiraban para orar. Un
paraje plagado de piedras antiguas y leyendas que
se remontan a la prehistoria, cuando los primeros
moradores erigieron aquí un santuario talayótico.
Este típico conjunto de casas de labranza nació al
abrigo de una torre de defensa construida en el siglo
XVI con el fin de protegerse de las incursiones de los
piratas berberiscos que por entonces azotaban el
Mediterráneo. La finca, enclavada en el Parque Natural
de Llevant, domina desde su privilegiada atalaya el
recinto medieval de la localidad de Capdepera, a
escasos kilómetros de las cuevas de Artà y de las
hermosas playas de Cala Agulla y Cala Mesquida.
