According to Greek mythology, Polyphemus was a
bearded, one-eyed giant who fell in love with nereid
Galatea. Ohla hotel, however, appears punctured by
a thousand of intriguing as well as eloquent porcelain
eyes which seem to writhe and spin round to better
take pleasure in the majestic beauty of Barcelona,
stretching at its feet.
“The possibility to find an island in the middle of
the city becomes a reality in the corner of Via Laietana
and carrer Comptal. We seldom, if ever, bump into a
site so full of history, located in the old traces of the
Roman canal which served the needs of urban water
supply and the former palace of the first Count of
Barcelona, Wilfred the Hairy”, the authors of Ohla’s
renovation project, Alonso & Balaguer Arquitectos,
state.
Polifemo, según relata la mitología griega, era un
gigante barbudo con un solo ojo que se enamoró de
la nereida Galatea. El hotel Ohla, en cambio, aparece
perforado por un millar de intrigantes a la par que
expresivos ojos cerámicos que parecen retorcerse
y girar sobre sí mismos para deleitarse mejor con la
augusta belleza de Barcelona, extendiéndose a sus
pies.
“La posibilidad de encontrar una isla en medio de
la ciudad se materializa en la esquina de la Via Laietana
con el carrer Comptal. Pocas veces nos encontramos
con un solar tan cargado de historia, ubicado sobre las
antiguas trazas del canal de abastecimiento de agua
romano y el que fuera palacio del primer Conde Rey
de Barcelona, Guifré el Pilós”, afirman los responsables
del proyecto de restauración del hotel Ohla, Alonso &
Balaguer Arquitectos, llevado a cabo en el año 2011.
