frustrante ed esagerato questo bisogno di igienizzare ogni
superficie. Sono convinto che la maniglia rimarrà nei nostri
progetti di interior; la sua utilità è fuori dubbio!

Sono convinto che nella nostra professione non si possa
prescindere da una precisa responsabilità: ogni progetto
risponde a esigenze contemporanee, ma deve avere,
come prospettiva, il futuro. Quindi riciclabilità, risparmio
energetico, sostenibilità, utilizzo di materiali a basso impatto
ambientale, sono tutti criteri che considero fondamentali
nel mio lavoro.
Per quanto riguarda la progettazione della maniglia, sono
partito dalle sue specificità funzionali e simboliche: la
maniglia è un segno grafico che interrompe la linearità
della superficie e segna il passaggio da un ambiente all’altro,
ed è tattile per antonomasia. Stiamo vivendo una fase, ormai
molto lunga, in cui ciò che ci viene negato è proprio la facilità
del contatto fisico: molto di ciò che realizzavamo mediante
la presenza fisica è diventato virtuale. Il contatto fisico ci è
mancato e viviamo questa mancanza con un senso di privazione
e nostalgia. E per quanto consideri decisivo il contributo dato
dalla tecnologia informatica anche all’arredamento attraverso
la domotica, ritengo vi siano degli ambiti in cui la fisicità sia
necessaria.
Progettare una maniglia, ora più che mai, per me significa creare
un oggetto visivamente appagante che, attraverso un contatto
fisico, mi consenta di accedere a un nuovo mondo. Toccarla ha
una valenza rituale: è la scoperta sorprendente del nuovo, è il
desiderio appagante del ritrovamento del “mio” mondo.

I am convinced that in our profession we cannot
disregard a precise responsibility: each project responds
to contemporary needs, but must have the future as its

So recyclability, energy saving, sustainability, and the use of
materials with a low environmental impact are all criteria
that I consider to be fundamental in my work.
With regard to the design of the handle, I started from its
functional and symbolic specificities: the handle is a graphic
sign that interrupts the linearity of the surface and marks
the passage from one room to another, and it is tactile by
definition. We are living through a phase one, which has
become quite long, in which what is being denied us is
precisely the ease of physical contact: much of what we used
to achieve through physical presence has become virtual.
We have missed physical contact, and experience this
deprivation with a sense of loss and nostalgia.
And as much as I consider the contribution of information
technology to furniture through home automation to be
crucial, I think there are areas where physicality is necessary.
For me, designing a handle now, more than ever, means
creating a visually satisfying object that allows me to enter a
new world through physical contact.
Touching it has a ritual value: it is the surprising discovery of
something new, the satisfying desire to rediscover ‘my’ world.
