l Flap è una visione. Il Pack è una visione. Nel primo c’è
la libertà dopo il crollo del muro di Berlino. Nel secondo
c’è una società che sta andando alla deriva, ignara. Le
visioni di Francesco Binfaré sono un ossimoro, sono
dei paradossi. Perché inquadrano il contemporaneo. E
lo fanno con una loro concretezza. “Sono meravigliato da come
il concetto di un divano possa essere lo scrigno di una visione
– dice Binfaré – Non tutto si presta a diventare questo tipo
di contenitore. Le visioni sono imbrogli della mente, che poi
prendono una loro realtà. Trovano la materia, come il fuoco
trova l’ossigeno. L’ossigeno della visione è un elemento che la
mette in dialogo con i mezzi che conosci, con la situazione che
stai vivendo. E questo fa sì che le visioni possano prendere la
forma che devono”. Per Binfaré, la forma è quella dei divani. Di
solito. Ma il “di solito” con lui non funziona, non vale. Perché
ci sono visioni che imboccano strade tutte loro, anche intime.
O che restano chiuse, custodite, lontane da sguardi importuni.
Una volta Binfaré fece un tavolo ispirandosi all’Africa.
“Era l’espressione di un desiderio: far volare l’Africa, un
continente dalla forma potente, estranea a ogni civiltà rigida.
La democrazia è tonda, la borghesia è ovale, il rettangolo è
gerarchico. La forma dell’Africa è unica. Tra quelle delle terre
emerse è per me la più bella. Quando si è seduti al tavolo
Africa, ciascuno ha un’originalità di ruolo, non è né uno del
cerchio né un capotavola. Quel perimetro descrive un modo
di stare tra gli umani”. Che poi questo racconto dell’Africa
è anche un trucco. Serve a definire la visione: un modo per
guardare con uno sguardo diverso. Diverso da sempre, da
tutti. “Il Pack è stata una zampata. Il Grande Soffice è il divano
definitivo. Adesso sto realizzando un’installazione. Prima un
angelo stanco. Stanco di attendere miracoli. Poi un angelo
stanco che si sta rialzando. Un messaggio di speranza. Ma è
difficile avere delle visioni oggi. Siamo in un tempo di attesa.
Attesa di un’annunciazione. Io cerco di avvicinarmi al mistero.

he Flap is a vision. The Pack is a vision. In the first
we can see the freedom after the fall of the Berlin
Wall. In the second a society drifting, unaware.
Francesco Binfaré’s visions are contradictions
in terms, paradoxes. This is because they frame
our contemporary world. And they do it with a concreteness
all their own.
«I am amazed how the concept of a sofa can be the crucible of
a vision - says Binfaré - and not everything lends itself to being
this kind of container. A vision is a trick of the mind which then
takes on its own reality. It finds material the way a fire finds
oxygen. The oxygen of a vision is something that establishes
a dialogue with the means you know and the situation you are
experiencing. This makes it possible for visions to take the
shape they need”.
For Binfaré this shape is a sofa. Usually. But ‘usually’ doesn’t
work with Binfaré. ‘Usually’ can’t be applied. Because certain
visions find a path of their own. Sometimes it is an intimate
path, that remains closed and guarded, away from prying
looks. Binfaré once made a table inspired by Africa. “It was the
expression of a desire to make Africa fly: this continent, with
its powerful shape, unrelated to rigid civilities. Democracy
is round, bourgeois is oval, the rectangle hierarchical. But
Africa’s shape is unique. Of all the landmasses, the most
beautiful to my mind is Africa. Seated at the Africa table each
person has their own unique role, neither part of a circle nor
head of the table. The particular perimeter describes a way of
being human together.” But this story of Africa is also a trick.
It serves to define a vision: a way of seeing with a different
gaze. Different from what has always been, from everyone else.
“Pack was the magic touch. Grande Soffice is the ultimate
sofa. Currently I’m working on an installation. First a tired
angel; tired of waiting for miracles. Then a tired angel rising
up, a message of hope. But it is difficult to have visions today.
