tandalto Sofa was given a Compasso d’Oro Honourable
Mention by the international jury of the XXVIII ADI
Compasso d’Oro Award at the ADI Design Museum in Milan
on Thursday 20 June. The sofa designed by Francesco Binfaré has
been recognised as a superior quality product, worthy of particular
note. Airy, soft, and elegant Standalto floats above the floor with its
open style and contours. Completely attuned to the wishes of those
who use it, the sofa features the fundamental element of the Smart
Cushion, and ensures maximum comfort with its generously wide
backrests, armrests and seats. The extraordinarily soft cushions are
padded with feathers and Gellyfoam®, a material patented by Edra.
Standalto is a sincere and representative name. The word ‘standard’
comes from the Old French estendart for banner, and today also has
the meaning of accepted norm, a uniform reference or model that can
be repeatedly used. In 2022 Francesco Binfaré, the sofa’s author,
was awarded the Compasso d’Oro award for lifetime achievement:
he has had ties to Edra for more than thirty years. He says: “For me,
research into the soft is a fascinating adventure. I continue to discover
more about the language of softness, and partly have acquired it,
yet there is so much still to explore”. By right, pieces awarded the
Compasso d’Oro Award and with an honourary mention, enter the
ADI Compasso d’Oro collection, recently declared of “exceptional
artistic and historical interest” by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage
and Activities on 22 April 2004. Umberto Cabini, President of the
ADI Foundation, explains that the permanent display at the ADI
Design Museum, “this patrimony of objects and documents of which
the museum is custodian, has a characteristic other museums do not
share: not simply a collection of industrial products, but the indelible
traces of metamorphoses in quality from the 1950s to the present
day”.
ADI President Luciano Galimberti continues, “increasingly the
Compasso d’Oro has taken on an institutional value, canvassing
our best design in the world in the role of cultural reference before
aesthetic, and affirming the idea that Italian design is not an activity
limited to the definition of forms, but dedicated above all to the
construction of deep relations”.

no Standalto è stato insignito della Menzione d’Onore del
Compasso d’Oro dalla giuria internazionale del XXVIII Pre-
mio Compasso d’Oro ADI. Il divano progettato da Francesco Binfaré
è stato riconosciuto come prodotto di qualità superiore meritevole di
particolare rilievo. Soffice, morbido, elegante, Standalto è sospeso
da terra e ha un profilo stilistico aereo. Completamente adattabile
ai desideri di chi lo usa, il divano valorizza l’elemento fondamentale
del Cuscino Intelligente e assicura il massimo comfort grazie all’am-
piezza degli schienali, dei braccioli e delle sedute. L’imbottitura
conferisce una straordinaria morbidezza ai cuscini: è composta da
piume e Gellyfoam®, materiale brevettato da Edra. Standalto è un
nome sincero e rappresentativo. Il termine standard deriva dal fran-
cese antico estendart, che indica stendardo, insegna. Uno standard
è una norma accettata, un modello di riferimento a cui ci si uniforma
perché sia ripetuto. “La ricerca della sofficità per me è un’avventura
affascinante. Io sto continuando a scoprire il linguaggio del molle.
L’ho acquisito in parte, ma c’è ancora molto da esplorare”, racconta
il suo autore Francesco Binfaré, premiato col Compasso d’Oro alla
carriera nel 2022 e legato a Edra da più di trent’anni.
Gli oggetti insigniti con il Premio Compasso d’Oro e con Menzio-
ne d’Onore entrano a far parte di diritto della Collezione Compas-
so d’Oro ADI, dichiarata il 22 aprile 2004 dal Ministero per i Beni
e le Attività Culturali di “eccezionale interesse artistico e storico”
ed esposta in permanenza all’ADI Design Museum. “Il patrimonio
degli oggetti e dei documenti che il museo custodisce – spiega Um-
berto Cabini, presidente della Fondazione ADI –, ha una caratteri-
stica che altri musei non hanno: non è semplicemente una collezione
di prodotti industriali, ma è la traccia indelebile delle metamorfosi
della qualità, dagli anni Cinquanta a oggi”. Aggiunge Luciano Ga-
limberti, Presidente di ADI: “Il Compasso d’Oro ha assunto sempre
più una valenza istituzionale, candidando il nostro miglior design
nel mondo a un ruolo di riferimento culturale prima che estetico,
affermando l’idea che il design italiano non sia attività limitata alla
definizione delle forme, ma soprattutto dedicata alla costruzione di
relazioni profonde”.
