CONVEX MIRROR
Having a convex mirror in your home reflects a sense of mystery.
Convex mirrors do have a real history. They played an important role in the running of high class
households. The convex mirror allowed the butler to oversee the progress of supper,
whilst keeping a discrete distance from the guests. It was a helpful tool in keeping an eye
on the situation.
Less well-known is the rather enchanting name the French have for the convex mirror:
‘oeil de sorcière’, the eye of the sorceress. In France, and elsewhere in Northern Europe in the
middle ages, the convex mirror was attributed magical powers. It was thought that, like a huge
eye, the convex mirror could observe all around it and repel evil forces.
