Grand admirateur d’Alexander Calder, Bernard Schottlander crée
en 1951 une série de luminaires du nom de Mantis. Le mouvement
est la source d’inspiration de tout le travail de Schottlander : artiste,
ingénieur-bricoleur, il met au point un système de pivot-contrepoids
astucieux, et utilise des joncs de métal souples et résistants. L’abat
jour, projeté comme un acrobate en l’air, reste unique. Silhouette
filaire évoquant naturellement une mante-religieuse en apesanteur, le
lampadaire Mantis joue sur la tension entre équilibre et déséquilibre.

[EN] A great admirer of Alexander Calder, Bernard Schottlander
created a series of lighting fixtures in 1951 named Mantis. Movement
serves as the inspiration for all of Schottlander’s work: as an artist
and engineer-tinkerer, he devised a clever pivot-counterweight
system and used flexible and resilient metal rods. The lampshade,
poised like an acrobat in the air, remains unique. With a wireframe
silhouette naturally evoking a hovering praying mantis, the Mantis
floor lamp plays on the tension between balance and imbalance.
