He began by getting interested in art decó furniture and the aesthetics
of the 1930s, and ended up with home appliances. Andrés Alfaro
Hofmann started collecting these domestic devices at the end of the
70s, but it wasn’t until the 80s that he started to systematically order
them. “I’m beginning to realize that the great promoter of design was
the marriage of the machine with the appliance,” he explains. “When
you bring a machine into the house, the public at large realizes just
how important design is.”
Empezó interesándose por los muebles de art decó y la estética
de los años treinta y se quedó con los electrodomésticos. Andrés
Alfaro Hofmann inició su colección de estas máquinas domésticas
a finales de los setenta, pero no fue hasta los años ochenta cuando
empezó a sistematizarla y ordenarla: «Me voy dando cuenta de que
el gran introductor del diseño fue el binomio de la máquina con el
electrodoméstico», explica. «Cuando se incorpora la máquina dentro
de la casa es cuando el gran público se da cuenta de lo importante
que es el diseño».
