Uly Martín knows how to get the best from a camera in order to
produce the weirdest and most inusual pictures. He did it while
looking at the past, when worked as a scientific photographer
specializing in paleontology. He did it on the bustling streets of Madrid
in the 1980s, with pictures of mass demonstrations that he sold to
newspapers. And since 1998 he’s been working at El País, Spain’s best-
selling general-interest newspaper.
We said Uly knows how to get the best out of a camera, and that’s
what he’s been doing for years, in a decidedly less than photogenic
setting: Parliament. “Here the toughest thing is to get something
different,” says Uly, who has covered wars in Libya and the Balkans.
But we asked him about some less epic photos, taken in less orthodox
places.
For some years now Uly Martín has been taking photos of Spanish
politicians in public toilets. A former Education minister looks at
his reflection as he leans his elbow on a pile of books; the Defense
minister brushes his teeth or the leader of one of the main political
parties proudly shows off a tattoo on his back. Spain’s current prime
minister is seen bent over in the small toilet of a plane... The series,
Ulynarios, has been expanded with figures from the worlds of culture
and journalism, attracting further models and followers. “So much so
that there are several politicians who have asked me to make a photo,”
he says proudly.
It all began eight years ago when the then minister of Culture, Ángeles
González-Sinde, a friend of Uly, sent him a selfie she had made in
front of a mirror. He responded with another, giving her advice about
lighting and framing. He thought it was curious, and so made another
photo, and another. “I opened an album on Facebook and little by little
filled it of photos of me with friends,” he explains. Taking into account
that he works in the epicenter of power in Spain, he ended up taking a
photo of himself with a politician. “Starting then, whenever I feel like
it, I ask permission to take a photo of the people I photograph for the
paper.”
Uly Martín sabe sacar partido a la cámara, dibujar sobre el carrete
fotografías peculiares, arrancar a la realidad sus estampas más
inusuales. Lo hizo mirando hacia el pasado, cuando trabajaba
como fotógrafo científico especializado en paleontología. Lo hizo
en las efervescentes calles del Madrid de los 80, haciendo fotos de
manifestaciones que después vendía a los periódicos. Lo hace, desde
1998, desde las páginas de El País, el periódico generalista más
vendido de España.
Decíamos que Uly sabe sacar partido a la cámara, y eso es lo que
hace, desde hace años, en un lugar tan poco fotogénico como el
Congreso de los Diputados. "Aquí es más difícil sacar algo diferente",
reconoce el fotoperiodista, curtido en acontecimientos como la guerra
de Libia o la de los Balcanes.
Sin embargo, le llamamos para preguntarle por otras fotos menos
épicas, disparadas en lugares menos ortodoxos.
Desde hace años, Uly Martín se dedica a hacer fotos a los políticos
españoles en los baños. El entonces ministro de Educación mira a
su reflejo apoyando el codo en un montón de libros; el de Defensa se
lava los dientes o el líder de uno de los principales partidos muestra
orgulloso un tatuaje que tiene en la espalda. El actual presidente,
encorvado, en el estrecho baño de un avión... Su serie, Ulynarios,
se ha ido ampliando a personajes del mundo de la cultura y el
periodismo, ha ganado en modelos y seguidores. "Tanto que ya hay
varios políticos que me piden su foto", reconoce él orgulloso.
Todo empezó hace ocho años, cuando la entonces ministra de cultura,
Ángeles González-Sinde, amiga de Uly, le envió un selfi hecho frente
al espejo. Él contestó con otro, dándole consejos sobre iluminación
y encuadre. Le pareció curioso e hizo otra foto más, y otra. "Me abrí
un álbum en Facebook y poco a poco lo fui nutriendo de fotos con
amigos", explica. Teniendo en cuenta que su oficina es el epicentro del
poder en España al final acabó cayendo alguna foto con un político.
"A partir de entonces, siempre que me apetece, pido una foto a los
personajes que fotografío para el periódico".
