What made you change the surf board
for design and living in Europe?
¿Qué le hizo cambiar la tabla de surf
por el diseño y venirse a vivir a Europa?
Actually I am a beach bum, as you know. I
didn’t really change surf boards for art or
design, because it was my first support, I
was painting on the surf board because I
had to make a living and I needed to paint
at the same time. So, apart from that, I had
my art studio and I had my design work
and surf boards were where the surfers
were, I was surfing, and working and devel-
oping. Coming to Europe was to a) follow
my heart, which is the most important part,
and the second is to enrich my knowledge,
my experiences, meet other cultures, meet
other people. / En realidad, no cambié las
tablas de surf por el arte o el diseño. Las
pintaba porque tenía que ganarme la vida y
al mismo tiempo necesitaba pintar. Aparte
de eso, tenía mi estudio de arte y mi trabajo
de diseño y las tablas de surf estaban donde
había surfistas… yo hacía surf, trabajaba
y aprendía. Lo de venir a Europa fue, en
primer lugar, para seguir a mi corazón,
que es lo más importante, y en segundo
lugar para ampliar mis conocimientos y
experiencia, conocer otras culturas y otras
personas…
Your work has been recognized all over.
You spent some time in Switzerland,
also in Japan… now you live in France,
and you were born in Israel. What is
home for you? Su trabajo ha sido reco-
nocido en todo el mundo. Pasó algún
tiempo en Suiza, también en Japón…
ahora vive en Francia y nació en Israel.
¿Dónde considera que está su hogar?
Home is where I am. At least that’s what
I like to think it is. My family, my close
family, my kids, my wife, we live in Paris.
The nuclear family lives away, but this is
if you look back into history. I like to go
to the same places, because I have so little
routine in my daily life, I like to have a
sort of a static thing. / Mi hogar está allí
donde estoy yo. Al menos es lo que me
gusta pensar. Mi familia, mis seres queridos,
mis hijos y mi mujer viven conmigo en
París. El resto de la familia vive lejos, pero
si echamos la vista atrás, así es como era
antes. Disfruto yendo siempre a los mismos
sitios porque, como mi vida es muy poco
rutinaria, me gusta crear algo permanente.
Having travelled the world so much.
Would you say design is global?
Después de viajar tanto por todo el
mundo, ¿diría que el diseño es global?
The word design as it is, doesn’t have a
meaning anymore, because everything from
tooth paste to hairspray, and to an iron,
or to a chair is called design, so I think
there’s a new definition. But what is global
is thinking. We have to think, design as a
science, science of everyday life, science of
living, science of society, science of culture,
science of earth, science of raw materials,
and so on. This is global, and this is specific
to all of us. / La palabra diseño en sí ha
dejado de tener significado porque todo,
desde la pasta de dientes a un bote de laca,
una plancha o una silla se llaman diseño,
por lo que creo que requiere una nueva
definición. Lo que es global es el pensa-
miento. Tenemos que pensar en el diseño
como una ciencia, la ciencia de la vida
cotidiana, la ciencia de vivir, la ciencia de la
sociedad, la ciencia de la cultura, la ciencia
de la tierra, la ciencia de la materia prima,
etc. Eso es global y es específico de todos y
cada uno de nosotros.
Art, design .. how far apart are they from
each other? Arte, diseño... ¿están lejos el
uno del otro?
Art and design are very different, they are,
the initial starting point is from a completely
different intellectual departure. You don’t
make art for the same reasons. Design
has a brief, art does not have a brief. Art
has a necessity. Both of them can be an
uncontrolled muscle. Only design needs an
ignition, somebody has to come and tell
you we need this, we need that and than
you ask questions and you do what you
do as a methodology. And in the art you
wake up in the middle of the night and you
have to do it because you have to do it,
because if you are not going to do it, you
are going to have to spend more time with
the psychotherapist. / Arte y diseño son
cosas muy diferentes, sí, porque su punto
de partida inicial es completamente dife-
rente desde una perspectiva intelectual. El
diseño tiene explicación, el arte no. El arte
nace de una necesidad. Ambos pueden ser
un músculo incontrolable. Pero el diseño
requiere un impulso, alguien tiene que venir
a decirte que necesita algo y entonces le
haces preguntas y haces tu trabajo siguiendo
una metodología. En el arte te despiertas
en mitad de la noche y tienes que hacerlo
porque sí, porque si no lo haces, tendrás que
pasar más tiempo con tu psicólogo.
