The amount of media coverage his designs
receive gives us an idea of the large impact
that his projects have worldwide. Created in
2002 he and his studio have worked on the
modernization of Pull & Bear, the creation
of unparalleled spaces such as Diverxo
(Chef Dabiz Muñoz’s restaurant) and even
the VIP area of the new soccer stadium of
San Mamés (in collaboration with Urbana
15 studio). Examples mentioned above are
only projects done within Spain, because
his designs are spread throughout the
world: America, Asia, Europe and the North
of Africa. / La repercusión mediática que
provoca cada una de sus nuevas aperturas
dan una idea del impacto que sus diseños
están causando a nivel internacional. Por
sus manos y las de su estudio (creado
en 2002) ha pasado la modernización
de tiendas de Pull & Bear, la creación de
espacios tan inigualables como Diverxo (del
chef Dabiz Muñoz) o incluso la Vip Área
del nuevo Estadio de San Mamés, en cola-
boración con el estudio Urbana 15.
Y estos son algunos ejemplos, sin salir de
España. Porque sus diseños se extienden
por todo el mundo: América, Asia, Europa y
el norte de África.
Born in Tangier and descended from
Catalan parents and grandparents, Lázaro
Rosa-Violán lives saddled between Barce-
lona and New York. He doesn’t seem to
be that 8-year-old kid that attended the
Fine Arts Academy as a visiting student. Or
maybe not. He defines himself as a “painter
by education, traveler by belief and interior
designer by instinct”. He says he keeps
finding inspiration everywhere with a style
that “is all the styles” that are the result of
his great cultural background. Let’s discover
more about the professional and the person

y abuelos catalanes, Lázaro Rosa-Violán
vive a caballo entre Barcelona y Nueva York
y lejos parece quedar aquel niño de 8 años
que acudía como oyente a la Academia de
Bellas Artes. O quizás no. Se define como
“Pintor por formación, viajante por convic-
ción y diseñador de interiores por instinto”,
y afirma seguir encontrando inspiración en
todas partes con un estilo “que son todos
los estilos” fruto de su gran bagaje cultural.

Painter before architect? What brought
you to the world of interior design?
¿Pintor antes que arquitecto? ¿Qué te
llevó al mundo del interiorismo?
Professionally, I did approach painting
before architecture, but my loves move in
parallel. It’s true that I wasn’t planning
to do anything related to architecture
professionally. I did the degree for pleasure,
without the intention of turning it into my
way of life, but there was a moment when
I realized that I was spending 90 % of my
life alone and I started doing projects to
work with people. / Profesionalmente sí me
acerqué a la pintura antes que a la arqui-
tectura, pero en amores, van en paralelo. Lo
cierto es que no pensaba dedicarme a nada
que tuviera que ver con la arquitectura.
Estudié la carrera por placer, sin intención
de convertirla en mi modo de vida, pero
llegó un momento en que me di cuenta
que pasaba el noventa por ciento de mi
vida solo y comencé a hacer proyectos para
trabajar en compañía.
Was your first success a product of that
loneliness or of teamwork? ¿Tu primer
éxito fue producto de aquella soledad
o del trabajo en equipo?
I didn’t really suffer much from being
alone, but there comes a point where you
need a team. And it’s just that everything
leads to everything. I’ll explain myself:
there was a moment when I had a pretty
intense social life with a pretty solitary job.
So my leisure activities were to have dinner
out, and I would see restaurants that horri-
fied me. That’s why when I saw the oppor-
tunity to develop my ideas in the famous
Can Vent in Formentera, I did it and it was
a success. / Realmente no sufría mucho por
estar solo, pero llega un momento en que
necesitas un equipo. Y es que todo conduce
a todo. Me explico: hubo un momento en
que tenía una vida social bastante intensa
con un trabajo bastante de anacoreta.
Así que mi ocio era salir a cenar y veía
restaurantes que me horrorizaban. Por eso,
cuando vi la oportunidad de desarrollar mis
ideas en el famoso Can Vent de Formen-
tera, lo hice y fue un éxito.
Is there a reference painter or architect
in your work? ¿Algún pintor o arquitecto
referente en tu trabajo?
I have many. Maybe Le Corbusier. I know
he’s a classic. But he did everything
and he did it very well. He knew how to
combine. Sometimes, because of money
issues, he would do projects with a super
simple range of materials. He touched
the paint and knew how to manage the
light. He covered everything and he did it
well. Though it’s only an example, I don’t
radicalize myself with anything. / Tengo un
montón. Quizás Le Corbusier. Sé que es un
clásico. Pero lo tocaba todo y lo hacía muy
bien. Sabía cómo combinar. A veces hacía
proyectos con una paleta de materiales
supersencilla, por problemas de dinero. Y
tocaba la pintura y sabía manejar la luz.
Pero es solo un ejemplo. Tampoco me
radicalizo con nada.
