‘In the Swimming Pool’ is Maria
Svarbova’s largest and most comprehensive
series yet. Originating in 2014 and
continuing to develop to date, this series
by the 28-year-old Slovakian artist – who
studied Restoration and Archaeology – has
been published in prominent international
magazines. The photographer’s fascination
with the space of public swimming pools
contributed to developing her distinctive
visual style. Located in several sites in
Slovakia, each image shows a different
pool, usually built during the Soviet era,
and the sterile, geometric beauty of these
old pools sets the tone for the photographs.
There is an almost cinematographic
quality to the images, stressed by the
artificial postures of the swimmers, filling
the sceneries with dramatism and color.
The apparently retro tones of the images
evoke a futuristic atmosphere, almost
otherworldly, further emphasized by their
clarity and the bright pool tiles, that
seem to have been placed ex profeso for
these photographic shoots. The palette of
pastel tones brings chromatic coherence
to the whole series and to the very
different pools, composing a consistent
and heterogeneous collection despite the
resemblance among takes.
Maria Svarbova was
born in Slovakia in 1988.
Though she studied
Archaeology, she soon
developed an interest in
photography. Svarbova
has won the 2016 edition
of the International
Photography Awards.
‘In the Swimming Pool’ es la serie
fotográfica más larga y completa de Maria
Svarbova hasta el momento. Comenzada
en 2014 y todavía abierta, esta serie de
la joven eslovaca de sólo 28 años ya ha
sido publicada en revistas de prestigio
de todo el mundo. La fascinación de la
fotógrafa —que estudió Restauración y
Arqueología— por los espacios de las
piscinas públicas la ayudó a desarrollar
un estilo personal que es hoy su seña de
identidad. Las diferentes piscinas, situadas
en varias localizaciones de Eslovaquia
y construidas en la época soviética, y
tienen una calidad casi cinematográfica
enfatizada por las artificiales posturas de
las nadadoras, que aportan dramatismo
y color a las instantáneas. Estos colores
de tonos aparentemente antiguos
evocan unas atmósferas futuristas y casi
extraterrestres, que se acompañan de
reflejos casi imposibles por su nitidez
y brillantes azulejos que bien podrían
haber sido colocados ex profeso para
estas fotografías. La paleta de tonos pastel
aporta una coherencia cromática que, a lo
largo de toda la serie y las muy diferentes
piscinas, construye una colección
fotográfica consistente y muy heterogénea
pese a la similitud de las tomas entre sí.
Maria Svarbova
nace en Eslovaquia
en 1988 y, aunque
estudia Arqueología,
pronto se interesa
por la fotografía. En
2016 resulta ganadora
en los International
Photography Awards.
