Joaquín Bérchez nace en Valencia en
1950. Fotógrafo e historiador del arte
—disciplina por la que es catedrático en
la Universidad de Valencia, y miembro de
la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San
Carlos de Valencia—, está especializado en
historia de la arquitectura. Sus imágenes
enmarcan este conocimiento teórico en
impactantes retratos, casi tangibles, de la
arquitectura y el paisaje que describen.
En su libro Pedreiras. Carne de dioses,
Bérchez captura las verticales e inmensas
canteras a cielo abierto de la ciudad
Vila Viçosa, en el distrito de Évora, para
muchos considerada la capital del mármol,
descubriéndonos un paisaje artificial que,
pese a ser tallado por el hombre, excede
con creces la escala de lo humano: un
paisaje que nos muestra el material en su
estado primitivo. Como escribe Vicente
Lleó Cañal en el prólogo del libro, «igual
que Miguel Ángel sentía auténtica pasión
por el mármol y acudía a las canteras de
Carrara para escoger personalmente los
bloques cuya veta (o ausencia de ella)
le resultaban más atractivos, Bérchez
demuestra la misma emoción, pasando así
de la natura naturata a la natura naturans,
es decir, de la concreción de la forma a
la infinita posibilidad de la materia en su
estado bruto».
Joaquín Bérchez was born in Valencia in
1950. A photographer and art historian –
he is chair professor in art history at the
University of Valencia and is a member
of the San Carlos Royal Academy of Fine
Arts of this western Spanish city – his
specialty is the history of architecture. His
images frame this theoretical knowledge
in impactful, almost tangible portraits
of architecture and the landscape they
describe. In his book Pedreiras. Carne
de dioses, Bérchez captures the vertical
and immense open-air quarries of the
Portuguese city of Vila Viçosa, considered
by many to be the marble capital of
the world, revealing to us an artificial
landscape that, though carved by man,
far exceeds the scale of the human: a
landscape that presents us the material
in its most primitive state. As Vicenter
Lleó Cañal writes in the foreword of the
book, “Michelangelo felt strong passion
for marble and would go to the Carrara
quarries to personally select the blocks
whose veins (or lack thereof) he found
most attractive. Bérchez demonsrates a
similar emotion, and with that, goes from
natura naturata to natura naturans – that
is, from the materialization of form to the
infinite prospects of the material in its
raw matter.”
