But let’s rewind this roll of film. All this began when he explained to a
friend how to take photos of herself in the mirror of her bathroom, so
we repeated the question and asked his advice, just in case we should
decide to emulate his art.
“The lights in bathrooms tend to be halogen zenithal, so you have to
be careful not to place yourself directly below, because the shadows
under the eyes can be excessive,” he explains. Some people think
washrooms are dirty or unaesthetic. “One politician told me she
wouldn’t participate in something so filthy,” says Uly. But instead
of hiding urinals, he wants them to appear so as to stress how
unexpected the setting is. “Especially if it’s a woman, and we’re in the
men’s room, there’s a certain contrast,” he explains.
Light is the biggest problem because many restrooms are interior, with
no natural illumination, something which can be very necessary. In
this kind of situation, Uly faces the same problems as any amateur
photographer, because the improvised and informal nature of the
series obliges him to put aside his regular camera and use a cell
phone.
“I use Instamatic, which is an app that takes 10 or 12 photos, each with
different focus and lighting,” he explains. “It provides a series of filters,
but I want the camera to modify the image, not me. I just compose:
suggest that the subject pick up a glass, a football or some knives.”
They’ve all been photographed by Uly, who says he will go on
portraying public figures in public bathrooms. Preferably in the men’s
rooms because –and here is some last bit of technical advice– “they’re
better lighted. I don’t know why, but they are. I’ve checked it.”

amiga cómo hacerse fotos en el espejo del baño, así que le repetimos
la pregunta y le pedimos consejos por si queremos emular su arte.
"Las luces en los baños suelen ser halógenos cenitales, hay que tener
mucho cuidado para no ponerse debajo o las sombras bajo los ojos
pueden ser enormes", explica. Hay quien opina que los baños ofrecen
estampas sucias o poco estéticas. "Una política, de hecho, se negó a
participar diciendo que no iba a hacer esa marranada", confirma Uly.
Pero él, en lugar de esconder los urinarios, prefiere que aparezcan de
fondo para remarcar lo insólito del escenario. "Especialmente si es una
mujer y estamos en un baño de hombres; da cierto contraste", explica.
La luz es el mayor de los problemas ya que muchos baños son
interiores y no tienen luz natural, muy necesaria en estos menesteres.
Uly se enfrenta a los mismos problemas que cualquier fotógrafo
amateur en esta situación, pues la naturaleza improvisada e informal
de esta serie hace que abandone su cámara para utilizar un teléfono.
"Utilizo Instamatic, que es una aplicación que hace un barrido de 10
o 12 fotos con diferentes enfoques e iluminación", explica. "Te mete
una serie de filtros, pero quiero que sea la cámara la que modifique
la imagen, no yo. Yo solo compongo, les hago que lleven una copa, un
balón o unos cuchillos".
Todos ellos han pasado por el móvil de Uly, que asegura seguirá
fotografiando a personajes públicos en baños igualmente públicos.
Preferentemente en los masculinos porque, ahí va un último y extraño
consejo: "Hay que hacer las fotos en el baño de hombres, que están
mejor iluminados. No sé por qué pero es así. Lo he comprobado".
