How has the profession changed from
when you returned penniless to architec-
ture to now that you head up MK27, an
internationally acclaimed studio?
¿Cómo ha cambiado la profesión desde
que retomó arruinado la arquitectura
hasta hoy, que dirige MK27, un estudio
aplaudido internacionalmente?
The beginning in architecture is always
difficult. I remember there were some very
tough times, even traumatic, I would say.
Now it is simpler. Clients know what they
want and they know our work. So things are
easier. Even despite the fact that my interests
are constantly changing. I am always finding
new challenges, influences. It seems to me
that architecture has an intimate relationship
with the aging process, with the passing of
time, and the changes that go along with it.
It often takes a long time to see the result
of our work. You can design something that
won’t be completed until, let’s say, five years
from now. Then, when I see it, I tend to be
very self-critical. I am never really satisfied
with my work because I am what we could
call (in the worst sense of the word) a perfec-
tionist. I always tend to analyze this and that
and thinking that now I could have done it
better. So, the next time I will change a ton
of things, such as, the proportions and others.
/ Los comienzos, en arquitectura, son siempre
difíciles. Recuerdo que, en mi caso, fueron
momentos muy duros, incluso traumáticos,
diría. Ahora es más sencillo. Los clientes
saben lo que quieren, conocen el trabajo que
venimos haciendo. De modo que las cosas
son más fáciles. Incluso, a pesar del hecho de
que mis intereses cambian todo el tiempo.
Siempre encuentro nuevos retos, influencias…
Me parece que la arquitectura tiene una
estrecha relación con un proceso de madurez,
con el paso del tiempo y los cambios que éste
produce en uno. A menudo, el resultado de
nuestro trabajo se dilata bastante ya que uno
diseña algo que no se terminará hasta dentro
de, digamos, cinco años. Y, entonces, cuando
lo veo, suelo ser muy autocrítico. Jamás suelo
quedar demasiado contento con las cosas que
hago porque soy lo que podríamos llamar, en
el peor sentido, un perfeccionista. Siempre
tiendo a analizar esto y aquello, pensando
que ahora podría hacerlo mejor, que la
próxima vez cambiaré un montón de cosas, la
proporción de aquella otra...
You have a completely comprehensive
concept of the profession. You work at
every level from the architectural project
to details of the interior design. You’ve
even ventured into product design.
Su concepción del oficio es absoluta-
mente global, trabaja todas las escalas:
desde el proyecto arquitectónico al
detalle del interiorismo, e incluso se ha
atrevido con el producto.
Architecture is multidisciplinary by definition.
In architecture school you learn to integrate
knowledge of art, design, graphic design,
landscape architecture and urban planning.

I strive to coordinate in my studio. There is
no separation between interior and exterior
elements. I like to design everything cohe-
sively, conceive it as a whole and something
complete and organic. In the end it doesn’t
matter what we are working on. Whether
it is a residential building like the Pradillo
or a lamp like the one I designed not long
ago for the Spanish company Parachilna.
What matters is the dialog that we establish
to develop our ideas in the most satisfying
way possible. In addition, I will tell you
that years ago after having seen that when
we would deliver exclusively architectural
projects, many clients would furnish their
homes disastrously. So we decided to control
the whole process from start to finish. It’s a
question half of disposition, half of reac-
tion. / La arquitectura es por definición
multidisciplinar. En la facultad uno aprende
a integrar conocimientos de arte, diseño,
diseño gráfico, paisajismo, urbanismo…
distintas perspectivas complementarias que
yo promuevo coordinar en mi estudio. No
hay separación entre los elementos de exte-
rior y los interiores. A mí me gusta diseñar
todo como una unidad, concebirlo como
un todo, algo completo y orgánico. Y, en el
fondo, no importa en qué trabajamos –un
edificio residencial, como Pradillo, o una
lámpara como la que he diseñado hace poco
para la compañía española Parachilna–, sino
el diálogo que establecemos para desarrollar
nuestras ideas lo más satisfactoriamente
posible. Y, por otra parte, te diré que después
de ver hace años, cuando entregábamos
proyectos exclusivamente de arquitectura,
cómo muchos clientes amueblaban de forma
desastrosa sus casas, decidimos controlar de
principio a fin todo el proceso. Así que mitad
voluntad, mitad reacción.
