lina española, sino que también ha logrado
que su nombre sea respetado (y admirado)
allá por donde vaya y en cada uno de los
proyectos que asume. Velencoso es sinónimo
de talento, pasión y -algo que muy poca
gente sabe-: control de sí mismo y mucha,
pero que mucha alegría de vivir. Un hombre
agradecido a la vida. Pasamos una espléndida

Tell us about your beginnings. Cuéntanos
tus comienzos en este mundo.
I was studying tourism in Barcelona and I
started to do my first professional jobs as a
model in a very small agency to make a bit
more money besides the money my father
gave me on the weekends or the one I made
when I worked in summer. In fact, it was my
mother and my sister who pushed me to do
it. / Estaba estudiando turismo en Barcelona
y comencé a hacer mis primeros pinitos
como modelo en una agencia muy peque-
ñita, para ganar un poco de dinero aparte del
que me daba mi padre los fines de semana
o lo que ganaba trabajando en verano. De
hecho, fueron mi madre y mi hermana las
que me empujaron a hacerlo.
Was the beginning hard? ¿Los inicios
fueron difíciles?
It took four or five years of doing lots of jobs
for brands that weren’t very important. When
I started working abroad, in Milan, Paris
or New York, I decided to quit my studies
and dedicate myself to fashion completely.
/ Supuso cuatro o cinco años de hacer
muchos trabajos para marcas que no eran
muy importantes. Cuando empecé a trabajar
fuera, en Milán, París o Nueva York, decidí
dejar los estudios y dedicarme completa-
mente a la moda.
How was going to Manhattan for the first
time? ¿Cómo fue llegar a Manhattan
la primera vez?
It was a dream come true. The objective of
these trips as a model was to be able to get
to New York. It was a vital, professional and
personal experience. It changed my life. /
Pues un sueño hecho realidad. Para mí, la
finalidad de estos viajes como modelo era
poder llegar a Nueva York. Y fue toda una
experiencia vital, profesional y personal. Me
cambió la vida.
Like many others, you had to leave Spain
because you couldn’t find opportunities.
Al igual que muchos otros, te tuviste que
marchar de España porque no encon-
trabas oportunidades.
I don’t think talent isn’t recognized here. But
outside, especially in the fashion industry,
there are many more opportunities. Paris,
for example, in the realm of cosmetics and
perfumes, it’s very powerful; Germany, in
the catalogue; Italy is the capital of male
tailoring and the United States is much more
developed in the world of sports fashion, by
far. Plainly, you can find more opportunities
abroad to show your worth. / No creo que
aquí no se reconozca el talento, sino que
fuera, sobre todo en el mundo de la moda,
hay muchas más oportunidades. París, por
ejemplo, en el ámbito de los cosméticos y
perfumes, es muy potente; Alemania, en el
del catálogo; Italia, la capital de las sastrerías
de hombre y Estados Unidos está mucho más
desarrollado en el mundo de la moda depor-
tiva, urbana. Simplemente, fuera hay más
oportunidades para demostrar lo que vales.
How does this lifestyle affect your
personal life? ¿Cómo repercute este tipo
de vida en el ámbito personal?
I’m 40 years old and I’ve been in the fashion
industry for more than half. My family
knows it and they understand it. Regarding
my friends, some stayed halfway, others are
new and with others you meet again, which
is also nice. / Tengo 40 años y llevo más
de la mitad en el mundo de la moda. Mi
familia lo conoce y lo entiende. En cuanto
a los amigos, algunos se han quedado en
el camino, otros son nuevos y con otros te
reencuentras, que también es bonito.
