Talk to us about the Eastern influence
in your projects… Háblanos de la
influencia Oriental en tus proyectos...
I think we like what’s exotic and what we
don’t have. That’s why, the more different
the exotic is the better. And for us, Euro-
peans and Mediterraneans, what’s Eastern is
the antithesis of what’s ours. The Mediter-
ranean has been in contact and establishing
a dialogue with the East, even before Marco
Polo’s travels. This is probably because the
poles attract each other. / Creo que nos
gusta lo exótico, lo que no tenemos. Por
eso, cuanto más diverso sea lo exótico
mejor, y para nosotros los europeos
y mediterráneos, lo oriental es la antítesis
a lo nuestro. Lo mediterráneo lleva muchos
años en contacto y diálogo con Oriente,
desde antes incluso de los viajes de Marco
Polo, seguramente porque al ser tan contra-
rios se atraen.

How would you like to end this inter-
view? ¿Cómo te gustaría terminar esta
entrevista?
Very often the questions I am asked get
stay in the forms and data. People try to get
us to say that we’re now working in South
Africa, in America, etc. What I would like
to tell is why we do the projects the way
we do. I’m interested in being seen as the
head or the captain of a team. In fact, that’s
what they call me in the office. In the end, I
do what I do because I have a great team. /

Buscan que contemos que ahora estamos
trabajando en Sudáfrica, en América, etc.
Lo que me gustaría es que digáis por qué
hacemos los proyectos que hacemos. Me
interesa que a mí se me vea como el cabeza,
el capitán de un equipo. De hecho, en el
despacho me llaman “capitán”. Al final
yo hago lo que hago porque tengo
un superequipo.
As in Walt Whitman’s “Oh, Captain, My
Captain”? ¿Como el “Oh capitán, mi
capitán” de Walt Whitman?
No, but I think it’s funny. In a meeting for
a project in Korea, a member of my team
introduced me like “the captain”. And I
kept the name. / No, pero me hace gracia.
En una reunión para un proyecto en Corea
un miembro de mi equipo me presentó así,
como “el capitán”. Todos se rieron y desde
entonces me he quedado con ese nombre.
