En 1956, tras finalizar sus estudios de
fotografía, Carlos Pérez Siquier inició su
dilatado relato sobre el vecindario de La
Chanca, un arrabal de Almería edificado
junto a la Alcazaba que desde finales del
siglo xix quedó sumido en el abandono y
que la posguerra hundió en la desolación.
La belleza compositiva de sus fotografías
se conjuga en equilibrio con el lenguaje
documentalista habitual de su depurada
producción pictórica, que reflejan con
sinceridad y dignidad las desparramadas
arquitecturas cubistas, sus empinadas
callejuelas y las carentes condiciones en
las que vivían sus vecinos.
In 1956, after completing photography
studies, Carlos Pérez Siquier started a
documentary project on La Chanca, a poor
neighborhood by the Alcazaba quarry in
Almería (southeast Spain). The town,
already in a state of neglect in the late
19th century, was plunged into misery
during the postwar years.
The compositive beauty of his
photographs is mixed with the usual
documentary approach of his work, which
offers a sincere and dignified portrait of
the town’s scattered cubist architecture,
its steep alleys, and the life of poverty
and deprivation of its inhabitants.
