Ca’n Terra es la casa de la tierra. Encontrar
este espacio excavado y reinventar su uso
implica escribir una nueva historia que
pueda rescatarlo de su abandono. Situada
en la isla de Menorca, esta antigua cantera
de piedra de marés surge como un fruto de
la naturaleza que requiere labranza y cultivo
para imbuir el espacio de domesticidad.
Ensamble Studio se apoya en la
tecnología para realizar un modelado digital
del interior de la caverna proyectando
miles de puntos láser sobre las diferentes
superficies, y registrando así con gran
precisión la estructura. Es el arquitecto
quien, mediante estas herramientas, crea
un nuevo espacio a partir de pequeñas
intervenciones que responden a la intención
de maximizar la relación con la naturaleza.
En contraposición a lo que ha venido
sucediendo a lo largo de la historia, la
arquitectura trata de mantenerse en un
segundo plano, permitiendo que la propia
materialidad del lugar sea quien sugiera
la distribución de la vivienda. Evita así
imponerse al medio y propone un viaje
al interior de la materia. Como la propia
descripción del proyecto afirma: «Si la
historia de la civilización ha evolucionado
en gran parte trascendiendo la idea en obra,
en Ca’n Terra, se invierte el proceso y se
transforma la historia en arquitectura».

Finding this excavated space and
reinventing its use implies writing a new
history that can rescue it from neglect.
Located on the island of Menorca, this
old Marais stone quarry emerges as a
fruit of nature that requires cultivating
and harvesting to fill the space with
domesticity.
Ensamble Studio uses technology
to carry out a digital modelling of the
cave’s interior, projecting thousands of
laser points on the different surfaces
and recording precise data about
the structure. With these tools, the
architects create a new space starting
out from small interventions that pursue
maximizing the relationship with nature.
In contrast to what has usually been
done in the past, the architecture here
remains in the background, letting
the materiality of the place suggest
the distribution of the house. In this
way it avoids imposing itself on its
environment and proposes a journey to
the interior of matter. As the project
description reads: “If the history of
civilization has evolved to a great extent
transcending the idea on site, in Ca’n
Terra, the process is inverted and history
is transformed into architecture.”
