Focussing on the threshold from landscape
to city, the work of Manuel Álvarez
Diestro (Santander, 1972) proposes to
think about the place humans occupy on
the territory, documenting the negative
impact of their activity but also the beauty
underlying the transformed environment.
Along the same line of other projects
developed by the photographer in large
metropolises like Cairo, Doha, and Beirut,
the series ‘New Landscapes of Iran’
is devoted to the urban developments
sprouting on the outskirts of Tehran,
reflecting how these new cities are
aggressively conquering the desert.
As if they emerged
directly from the earth,
the blocks photographed
by Diestro outside
Tehran evoke apocalyptic
landscapes that question
the way in which we must
face the growth of the
urban population.
Como si surgieran
directamente de la tierra,
los bloques fotografiados
por Diestro en las afueras
de Teherán evocan
paisajes apocalípticos que
cuestionan la forma de
enfrentarnos al crecimiento
de la población urbana.
Enfocada en el umbral entre el paisaje y la
ciudad, la obra de Manuel Álvarez Diestro
(Santander, 1972) plantea una reflexión
sobre el lugar que el hombre ocupa en el
territorio, revelando el impacto negativo
de su actividad, pero al mismo tiempo
la belleza que subyace en el entorno
transformado. En la línea de otros proyectos
llevados a cabo en grandes metrópolis
como El Cairo, Doha o Beirut, la serie
‘New Landscapes of Iran’ está dedicada a
los nuevos desarrollos urbanísticos que
se construye en las afueras de Teherán,
y escenifica la feroz conquista del
desierto de estas nuevas ciudades.
