The CIPP (commission for paleontological
and prehistoric research) was founded in
1912 to organize the study and reproduction
of cave art in the Peninsula. This initiative, in
which prominent figures like Santiago Ramón
y Cajal and Ignacio Bolívar participated,
was directed by Eduardo Hernández Pacheco,
who collected the preliminary sketches
carried out by the artists Cabré Aguiló and
Benítez Mellado. Over a hundred years
later, this exhibition, curated by Begoña
Sánchez Chillón (CSIC), displays these
extraordinary reproductions that constitute
a scientific portrait of Prehistory, and an
artistic manifestation today.
The exhibition ‘Art and
Nature in Prehistory’
features a collection of
the tracings of cave art
(the majority of them
previous to the Spanish
Civil War) at the Museo
Nacional de Ciencias
Naturales in Madrid.
La Comisión de Investigaciones
Paleontológicas y Prehistóricas, se creó en
1912 para el estudio y copia de las pinturas
rupestres en la península. Este esfuerzo, en
el que participaron Santiago Ramón y Cajal
e Ignacio Bolívar, fue dirigido por Eduardo
Hernández Pacheco, que recopiló los
esbozos iniciales de los artistas Cabré Aguiló
y Benítez Mellado sobre esta disciplina. Más
de cien de años después, esta exposición,
comisariada por la conservadora del CSIC,
Begoña Sánchez Chillón, saca a la luz estas
magníficas reproducciones que constituyen
un retrato científico de la prehistoria, y una
manifestación artística en la actualidad.

y Naturaleza en la
Prehistoria’ presenta una
colección de calcos de
arte rupestre (la mayoría
previos a la Guerra Civil
española) en el Museo
Nacional de Ciencias
Naturales de Madrid.
